Show City Council Refuses to Grant the Application of Max Jaenscli. TWELVE HELD UP PENDING FURTHER CONSIDERATION Question of Keeping Saloon Cigar Stands Open Sunday Still Undecided. There was a l-ivcly squabble over liquor licenses at Thursday evening's meeting of the City Council. In the wind-up, twelve licenses were held up for further consideration, two applications applica-tions were stricken from the list rccom ( mended by the license committee until j Chief of Police Pitt takes some action regarding thorn, ouo license recommend- i od by tho committee was rejected, and licenses were approved. Max Jaensch. who lias been endeavoring endeavor-ing for more than a 3'car to secure a license to sell liquor at (3-1 Richards street, was the cmbr one of the lui applicants ap-plicants to lose out entirely- This is the second time that Mr. Jaensch has taken the connt, and Ire is now down and out for good. Mis former application applica-tion was turned down by a vote of the council some time ago upon a protest of property owners on the street, and it was not known, until after the report of the committee, had been presented Thursday evening, that Mr. Jaensch was still in the running, and it would not; havo been known had not Mr. Ilollcy become inquisitive. After the list had been read, Mr. Ilolley asked if there were any new saloons included, and Mr. Stewart, chairman of the conunittoc, replied re-plied in the allirmative. Application for License Rejectod. As soon as it was learned that Mr. Jaensch 's name was on the list, Mr. Fernstrom went to tho support of Mr. Ilolley with a motion that the license be rejected. I The original objection to the saloon was in view of the fact that it was near ! the skating rink, but Mr. Stewart said that the committee, had been given to understand that tho rink had gone out of business. Other members, however, stated that the proprietor of the rink had advised them that the rink was only closed during the summer months, and would reopen when cool weather came. On Mr. Pernstrom 's motion to reject the application of Mr. Jaensch, the vote was as follows: Yeas Cowburn, Pernstrom, Ferry, Hodgson, Holley, Hall, Murdoch, Ray-bould Ray-bould and Davis 9. Nays Black, O'Domicll, Stewart and Wood 4. The license of the Sun Drug company was held up, because Chief Pitt had neither approved nor rojected it, and the two licenses of F. City Auditor Alff presented the pay rolls for the half month ended July 15. aggregating aggrega-ting $17,377.12, and the usual order was made concerning tho matter.
