Early in tho morning the crowds be- ' gau scrambling up the bluffs to catch the first sight of smoke a'bovo tba 'M southeastern horizon, and the first rcali- zation of the long-cherished hopo canio 1 jfl at 7:30 o'clock in the morning, when iH a message camo from the lener settle-ment settle-ment on the island of Molokai that the fleet had been sighted there, steaming in line nf squadrou formation at a -M speed of ten knots. An overcast sky prevented the watchers near here from seeing far out to sea, but the patience of the lookouts was rewarded by the appearance of the Connecticut off the entrance to tho channel at uoon. Enthuslatic Greeting. At 12:50 p. m, the Connecticut en-tered en-tered the harbor and was saluted from , the naval station, and at 1:2S p. m. she, "!H followed by the other ships, rounded the IjH lighthouse buoy and all came to anchor IH inside the harbor, while the poutup en- tH thusiasm of the islandors found vent in whistling sirens and the bursting of davlight fireworks. .11 As soon as the Connecticut had come to anchor, she was boarded bv the re- '''IH caption committee, who formally wel-coined wel-coined I?ear-Admiral Sperry and his of- h ficers and men to partake of Hawanun hospitality. , , . , IH Later in the afternoon. Did Some Real Work. For two hours or more daily, except on Sundav, tho fleet had tactical evqlu-tions evqlu-tions and" at the same time all routine drills were carried on. No noteworthy incidents occurred on tho entire voyage, and, as a matter of fact, this, the first leg af a long cruise, JH was rather more uneventful than usual. The fleet never had to stopt or slow down, nor did any of the ships have to fall out of formation through acci- JM dents to machinery or steering gear. The health of the crews has been verv good and there have . been no doaths or serious accidents since leav-ing leav-ing San Francisco. The Nebraska, which was left behind when the fleet sailed from the Golden Gate on account of scarlet fever cases among her crew, overtook the fleet at G:30 a. m. yester- The third division, which. went to La-liaiua La-liaiua for coal, will come to Honolulu Julv 19 and reioin the other members of the fleet.
