Show ' SEVIER IS THUD SJpilL? Citizens of the County Are Betrayed Be-trayed by Utah Sugar Company. PROMISES HELD OUT WERE NOT FULFILLED People Will Not in Future Add Any Dividends to the Hierarchy. Special to Tho Tribune. RICHFIELD, Aug. 25. Even tho name, of Joseph F. Smith at tho head of the Utah Sugar company does not relieve tho suspicions and beliefs of the people of this county that tho snld company has boon guilty of tho practlco of arts, wiles and deception In tho matter of locating a sugar factory In Sanpetq county, nor will tho namo of tho same person at the head of tho now Sanpete nnd Sevier Sugar company com-pany entice many people of this county to Its support. Nothing has appeared to date to change the belief of any porson in this codnty that the rtnh Sugar company, com-pany, with Joseph F. Smith at Us head, has been guilty of wilful misrepresentation misrepresenta-tion and duplicity ever since it hastened Into this field to head off the project of another company last winter. Heading Off Locker. It will bo remembered that P. B. Locker of Salt Lako camo among the. people hero several months ago with a proposition proposi-tion from some capitalists to placo a factory fac-tory In this valley. The Utah Sugar company, when It found out that this proposition was finding favor and that the deal was In prospect of going through, hastened Its representatives down here to head olt tho Locker movement. The sceno of action was soon transferred to Salt Lako and the people wero soon disappointed disappoint-ed with the announcement that Mr. Locker Lock-er had withdrawn his proposition. Representatives Repre-sentatives of the Utah Susar company wore sent down hero and held out tho Inducement In-ducement that If tho peoplo of this county would support this company, turn tho contracts signed up with Mr. Locker over to the said company, and subscribe tho greater portion of a given number of acres, then the Utah Sugar company would build a factory In this county. , Flattering Promises Made. There wna a deposition at tho tlmo among tho peoplo not to support the Utah Sugar company, and It was not until several sev-eral public meetings wero hold and all kinds of flattering promises wero mado and an Increase on the price of beets rnlaed this year was that the peoplo finally wero Induced to give their support sup-port to the Utah Sugar company and to ontor Into the contest for the location of a factory In this county. What Beet-Growers Understood. It wns understood by every beet grower grow-er In this county that If this county subscribed sub-scribed si greater acrcago of beets for tho 19C6 or 1M6 crop of sugar beets, the first factory would bo located In this county. Of tho 4000 acres required by the sugar company Sevier county furnished 250) ncrcs, to 15C0 acres for Sanpete. Offers by tho County. This county offered several sites for a factory which were pronounced as good and practical as any In Sanpete and tho growers unanimously agreed to support any slto which tho company might select In this county. This county showed particularly par-ticularly this year that It was able to withstand seasons of drouth by having good and sufficient reservoirs for storing away water In tho winter. This county had demonstrated that It could raise beets of as good nuallly as those produced pro-duced anywhero in the State. This county coun-ty showed that It could raise as high as twenty-five tor.e to the acre. It showed all along that It was leading Sanpete In beet culture by three to one. But notwithstanding not-withstanding all of thlg, the factory people peo-ple turned Sevier county down cold when tho time came for selecting a locatloii for the first factory. One Explanation. The only explanation which tho sugar company has glvon of Its action Is that Sanpete had a more condensed population popula-tion than Sovler In a given area and that probably more people could be Induced In the future to raise beets In Sanpeto county coun-ty than in Sevier because there were more people In tho former county. As a consolation to this county the "promise was held out that when this county alono woujd show Its ability to support a factory fac-tory It could have one. It had helped Sanpeto get one, but now It must stand alone for Itself. People Are Ignorant. A storm of Indignation nnd wrath swept over this country when It was known that the factory peoplo had selected se-lected Sanpete county, and this feeling was augmented when the explanation of the factory officials was made public. The people- of Sevier county feel that they have been buncoed, that they have been mado a cat's paw simply that tho Utah Sugar company might hold this field against any competition. The beet-growers beet-growers of this county declnro with emphasis em-phasis that they will ralso no more beets for the Utah Sugar company, nor tho Sanpete and Sevier Sugar company, nor have anything moro to do with cither of them. The peoplo of this countv havo lost faith In them, and can not " credit their promises any more. They say thev ylll put their beet lands bade to other crops or feed the beets to milk cows. Betrayed by Sugar Company. Tho past two seasons, with tho blight ono year, and the fly and worm tho next, havo been very discouraging features In this county, and now to be turned down and betrayed by tho sugar company Is tho last straw. Tho sugar company Is vigorously denounced by every ono In this county. ITo More Beets. Some advocate tho Idea of again trvlng to get other parties to come In here "and build a factory. They havo mado such progress In sugar be(ct growing th,at thev are loth to abandon the Industry now. but rather than add to the dividends of Josoph F. Smith's company they will not grow another sugar bect. |
