Show A DEFINITE REMEDY. Tho Deserct News wants to know how polygamy will bo suppressed In Utah by tho expulsion of Apostle Rood Smoot from tho Scnato of the United States. It pretends to have asked that "question before, without receiving any answer." No ono of the opponents of Apostlo Reed Smoot dares to hope that even his expulsion would prevent the Pen-roses Pen-roses and the Joseph F.' Smiths and the Tanners from practicing polgamy. These wvotches will probably continue to teach the doctrine and to stand as exemplars to the young people by engaging en-gaging in it contrary to the laws of God and man. But the expulsion of one of the accessories to their crimes (nnmely, Apostle Reed Smoot,) will serve notice that the United States does not propose to countenance such violations of law and pledge of honor; that the member of the hierarchy who Joins with them In their Iniquity cannot hold any place of profit or trust under tho Government; and that If they will Insist upon living their lives ns aliens to tho institutions and tho sentiment of tho United States, they must livo such lives out from under tho flag of this Republic. This may be an Indefinite remedy, and an Intangible result, from the viewpoint of the News; but to the Christian women of tho land, against whom particularly the Nows directs Its shafts of ridicule, the attainment Is not ,only desirable, but It Is concrete, substantial sub-stantial and effective. Much as the Penroses and the Joseph F. Smiths and tho Tanners love to proclaim pro-claim and practice plural marriage, If they find that they cannot do this and at the same time maintain their temporal tem-poral ascendancy among their people and In the surrounding States, the chances are that they will retreat for they may love the celestial order much, but they love the pelf and power of the world more. Let the News not deceive Itself (Inasmuch (In-asmuch as It cannot deceive the Christian Chris-tian women of America): this case Is thoroughly understood by the Christian Herald, at which the News seeks to sneer, and by the millions of memorialists memorial-ists who are addressing the Scnato with a petition for tho unseating of Apostle Smoot. . These people are not misled, and they do not misrepresent. They are attacking Reed Smoot-not because he Is a polygamlst they do not charge that but because ho is an apostle of the Mormon church, and as such he gives his first allegiance to tho law-breaking law-breaking hierarchy. To refuse to the emissaries of the hierarchy any recognition recog-nition in our national civic life is not as useless In this case as the News pretends. |
