Show DISPLAY OF HEMP- FM BENEFIT OF 111. TAFT Senator Long Promises Free Trade to the Philippine Islands. LEGASPI, P. I., Aug. 25. The transport trans-port Logan, Avlth Secretary Taft and party on board, arrived here today. The city, which Is the capital of Albay province. In Luzon, was from nil appearances ap-pearances the most prosperous of all the places In the Islands so far visited by the party. Ingenious Decorations. The decorations displayed In honor of the visitors were decidedly' Ingenious and highly elaborate. An interesting display of hemp, the main source of wealth of this community, was a feature fea-ture of the reception parade, and along the entire route of three miles from the city to Camp Daraga trees at Intervals of every twelve feet were draped with the valuable fiber. A banquet was spread at noon, at which Senator Long of Kansas made a very effective speech, during which ho virtually promised that the privileges of free trade would be granted to the islands, for the reason that from them there was no fear of competition in any pronounced form. Tho speakers were unanimous in their expressions of admiration ad-miration of the place. Souvenirs Presented. Before leaving1, Miss Roosevelt was presented wfth many interesting souvenirs sou-venirs by citizens. Tomorrow, August 26, the Logan will arrive at Sorsogon, a town In Albay about twenty-three miles south of Legaspl. On Monday morning, August 27, she will put in at Olongapo, the naval base of the American Amer-ican Philippine sciuadron. arriving- at Manilla on the evening of the same day. |
