Show CONRAB'S-BIG MINES. The Proposition Exciting Much. Interest In-terest in the Fnv North. All ndvlces from Alaska Indicate that J. H. Conrnd. for several yvars Identified with und6rtitklngs at Mercur and Tark City, has acquired the bonanza for which ho has been exploring the North. Tho Evening Star, published dally at Whltohorso, In tho Yukon territory, say3 of it: Tunnels run or shafts sunk in a dozen or moro places on the Conrad Consolidated, Conrad-Bonanza and J. H. Conrad groups of mines In tho mountains moun-tains adjacent to Llttlo "Windy Arm, havo demonstrated beyond tho shadow of a doubt that thero lies tho richest and most extensive body of silver and gold oro ever discovered on tho American continent. The various, Conrad groups comprise Koventeen claims, on each of which tho oro vein is from eight to fourteen feet wldo and assays nil tho way from ?00 to $3000 per, ton, principally In silver. At present ho oro Is being mined that assays as-says less than SG00 per ton. To dnto moro work has been done on tho Montana mlno than on tho others. Thero a tunnel has penetrated tho mountain a dlstnnce of 240 feet, all of which tunnel, with the exception of the llrst few feet, runs through oro going from $2000 to J30CO to tho ton. Already from 090 to $00 tons of oro nre on tho Montana dump. It Is now being sacked and packed out by mulo train to tho steamboat landing, a distance of four miles, for shipment to smelters. Adjoining tho Montana nro tho Mountain Moun-tain Hero and Glacier claims, and on tho latter and 1550 feet from tho Montana tunnel nnolhor tunnel Is being run Into tho motmtnln side,, -which will tap tho Montana tunnel. Later tho oro from this entire mountain will bo taken out by tho Olaclor tunnel, near tho mouth of which will be located tho mlno termlnnl of the oro-carrylng aerial tramway, now in course of construction. A mile southward from the Montana, Mountain Hero, Glacier and other mines comprising tho Montana group, nro found tho Venus. Uranus. Uranus No. 2, M. ft N. and other claims, on all of which tho lodgo has been located, the oro from which is shown by assays to be oven richer than that of tho Montana group. To convey from these latter mentioned clnlhis tho oro to tho beach a second aerial tramway will bo constructed, nnd for the purposo of surveying nnd constructing con-structing this second tram It. M. Itlblet of Spokane, Wash... the greatest aerial tramwny constructor on tho continent, Is expected to arrive In a fow duys. The tramwny is tho first of its kind undertaken In Yukon territory. Tho length of tho stntlonnry cable will bo 10.3SG feet, while tho bucket-carrying endless end-less cnblo will bo twlco that length. Tho cable will work by the gravity system and automatically. Tho mlno terminal of tho cablo tramway will bo at. an clovatlon of JI70 feet above that of the bench terminal. Material for tho tramway will bo packed and "snaked" up tho mountain sldo by mules, of which Billy Wlesdcppo Is operating oper-ating a train of twenty-flvo head. Tho pack train will carry construction material mate-rial for tho tramway up tho mountain and return with ore. Messrs. Conrad and Singer, for tho mining mi-ning company, havo secured by purchase from tho Government 320 acres of land on tho beach for tram terminals, mill sites, wharfage and for such other uses as their business may demand, nnd thcro a tented village Is already springing up under tho nnmo of Conrad City. The Star, In concluding its story, contains con-tains much clso of Interest, and says' the railway company will extend a spur to "Windy Arm to gather in tho revenues from tho Conrad output. |
