Show RESORTING TO THREATS. Baffled In the attempt to push through the City Council a robbing and grafting ordinance for the benefit of President Joseph y smith's T'rah Light and Railway Company, the hierarchy now resorts' to threats. The letter sent to Councilman Hartensteln, printed In yesierday morning's Tribune, is the proof of the bulldozing tactics in the attempt to intimidate the members of the Council who are not In favor of the Smith light 4nd railway franchise grab and graft, This letter threatens Mr. Hartensteln with defeat In case he again comes before be-fore the people fof election. No doubt i he same threats hnve been made or w III be made by the hlerarch's direction and authority, to other members of the council who nppo.se his will in this matter. But these tactics will fall, ns other pressure has also failed, in the case of Councilman Hartensteln, and they Will fall also with all the Gentile members. It Is an infamous programme which the hlerarch la seeking thus to enforce. He will denounce and defeat any member mem-ber of the i nunc It who Is not pliant to his wishes and who does not abjure his oath of faithful service to the city and agree to subserve Instead the Interest of an oppressive, odious, and arrogant monopoly. And with all this, and with the black record that has made a trail of slime and stench all over the State since lWfi. and that made the same over the Territory Terri-tory for close upon fifty years, the c hurch Is not In politics! What a filthy fraud, what a putrid pn lense, all this hierarchic denial, evasion, eva-sion, greed, false pretense and humbug Is' Tune uas when those- who lied before be-fore the Lord fell dead. But In these degenerate days, the more the Impudent Impu-dent pretenders and base deceivers who claim to speak for the Lord, lie, sneak, and rob. the higher they climb in the favor of "the Lord." |
