Linevitch, the now commander of tho Russian land and sea forces in the far East, Is In tho sixty-sixth year of his age. He was fighting in tho Caucasus when ho was 21. took part In the Russo-Turklsh Russo-Turklsh war of 1S77-S. and has slnco taken part in all of Russia's Asiatic campaigns. Linevitch was also prominent In tho relief re-lief 6t tho legations at Peking. He la greatly beloved by the soldiers because of his constant solicitude for their welfare At tho battle of Mukden Gen. Linevitch was reported March 5 as stubbornly holding hold-ing his position and having repulsed thirteen consecutive attacks of tho Japanese, Jap-anese, but In splto of this he Is said to have escaped with slight losses, and March 13 ho entered tho Russian lines south of Tie pas with his regiments in perfect order. Tho following day tho Russian troops, apparently those commanded by Gen. Linevitch, repulsed an attack at tho Fan river, tho Japanese leaving a thousand men killed before tho Russian positions. |
