Show TRADE, BUSINESS, AND FINANCE. The week has presented no essentially essen-tially new features, but tho former conditions, the abundance of the crops, tho high prices for grain, fruit, and vegetables; the great and rich production produc-tion of tho mines, and the favorable railroad situation as regards new construction, con-struction, have all been emphasized. Only about eighty miles of track remain re-main to be laid on the Salt Lake route, the San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake railway. The grading crews are pushing work, with a view of closing the gap at tho earliest possible date, and the rails will not be long behind. The Moffat road Is In excellent shape, and there can be no doubt that Us work is to bo prosecuted In the most advantageous advan-tageous manner during the winter. The Western Pacific Is also In strong hands. It may be that tho great contest con-test that is on for the control of tho Harrirrian system will have an important impor-tant effect on this line, especially if Gould gets that control; for ho is thought to he the controlling force behind be-hind the Western Pacific. The annual report of tho Union Pacific Pa-cific shows that road to have had a most prosperous year. The gross earnings earn-ings were upwards of fifty-five millions, the operating expenses twenty-nino millions, tho net earnings, twenty-six millions. The surplus was close upon ilvo millions. But the feature of especial espe-cial local interest here is the announcement announce-ment in the report that during the year the Oregon Short Line company purchased pur-chased a heavy interest, which It now holds, In tho San Pedro, L03 Angeles & Salt Lake Railway company. The sum paid for that half interest was almost fifteen million dollars. The report Includes In-cludes the Oregon Short Lino in its figures, and shows that, aside from tho half-Interest purchase specified, tho company hns ndvanced twelve and a half million dollars "for the construction construc-tion of new lines, for the completion of steamships, and for additional rolling stock." The reference to steamships evidently means that the Union Pacific has been helping out on the oriental steamship line which the Southern Pacific Pa-cific has been keeping up for so many years. The Oregon Short Line Is having hav-ing a record-breaking year, being now engaged in handling the greatest traffic traf-fic in its history. |
