Show AN OUTRAGEOUS AFFRONT. - To prove that they aro not In politics, poli-tics, the leaders of the church contlnuo to engage in politics. Reed Smoot'B seat in the Senato is In 'danger. Tho American public Is beginning to understand un-derstand tho monstrous manner in which 'occlcslnstlcism has violated Its covenant In thl3' State and has dominated domi-nated all tho public affairs of tho commonwealth. com-monwealth. To protect Smoot in his seat, to mollify tho Investigation at Washington, to satisfy the Democrats of Utah that they aro not entirely out of favor with the church leaders, It is proposed to crucify tho Honorablo Joseph Jo-seph Howell at tho poll3 this year and to elevate the Hon. Orlando WV Powers to a place in the Houso of Representatives; Representa-tives; and President Brlgham H. Roberts Rob-erts Has been selected by proper authority au-thority to' send the message from church headquarters on the wings of his' oratory. Tho., objection is general In Utah against' this intrusion of President Brlgham H. Roberts, with bis well-known well-known ecclesiastical backing, Into tho arena of politics. His appcaranco is as significant an indication as if the president of the church wero to declare, from tho highest pulpit in tho Tabernacle, Taber-nacle, 'and the Deseret No.ws were to declare, under the namo of Its apostolic editor, that tho will of God proclaimed Orlando W. Powers tho elect for Congress. This kind of a message docs not belong be-long .to American political life. It 13 an outrageous affront to tho pcoplo of Utah and the Nation. There 13 another reason for the general gen-eral objection to the political manifestation manifes-tation of President Roberts. By the testimony of himself and other leaders it is shown that they aro living In violation vio-lation of tho law of God and man, and it Is demonstrated that they propose to contlnuo this violation. Without condoning con-doning their practice. The Tribune has recognized that in the evolution of this question certain characteristics of human hu-man nature must be taken Into account; ac-count; and neither The Trlbuno nor any Gentilo In Utah has pursued these men with any threat of prosecution. But at least they should respect their fellow-citizens fellow-citizens sufllclontly to ccaso parading themselves beforo the world as political politi-cal leaders, contrary to their own solemn sol-emn covenant. Let them, if they can, contlnuo to live in disobedience of tho statuto nnd tho divine commandment; let them, if they can, hold all of their church following In supine obedience to' them; lot them, if they can, escapo all earthly consequences of their confessed con-fessed offenses; let them, if they can, dwell in undisputed good will with their large and increasing families; but let them maintain, what one of their number has called the "unobtruslvo sanctity" which should and must be observed, or they may provoke into activity tho laws which they have defied. Theso men have chosen their own portion. They claim that -they -have continued their practices out of loving regard for tho women nnd children whoso happiness, whose lives. Indeed, were in their keeping. Let them demonstrate dem-onstrate some of the same tenderness which they Invoice from the rest of the world in the name of these women and children, by avoiding that pomp nnd I circumstance of political activity which carried (o excess threatens to deprive de-prive these same women and children of the natural protection to which they arc by every humane consideration entitled. en-titled. The appearance of President Brlgham H. Roberts as the emissary of tho church in .politics In Utah has more than a State significance. The people of Utah will be looked upon throughout through-out the Nation as having not only condoned, con-doned, but protected and encouraged I1I3 violation of the law; and It Is probable prob-able that when tho investigating committee com-mittee resumes Its consideration of tho Smoot case this same activity of Brlgham Brlg-ham H. Roberts will be quoted against the church and against all of the peoplo of the State. The people of this country will not be satisfied by this effort of the church to Interfere In politics In order to prove that it does not interfere in politics; ' nor will they be satisfied with a community com-munity which accepts President Brig- ; ham H, Roberts (whom Senator Smoot has called a law-breaker) as tho man chosen to convey tho political will of 1 God to the followers of his church. It is. an outrageous affront to the Republic. Re-public. " 1 |
