Show I PREACHED ON PRINTING. Dr. Pinkerton Tells of John Gutenberg- nnd His Work. "Gutcnborg and tho Printing Press" was the subject lectured upon ty tho Rev. Dr. T. W. Plnkorton, who is giving a .series of lectures, entitled, "Tho Men Who Have Made History," at the Central Cen-tral Christian church, last nicht.' Tho i.peaker began by showing that God docs not confine his movements to those things called religious, and said that tho rise and triumph of the Roman empire' was a r. reparation for tho spreading of the Christian religion. Ho showed tho part plaved bv the invention in-vention of printing in tho work of God and tho salvation of men. by quoting l'rom tho history of those times. Wycllfie, ho sold, had given tho world Its first relin-blo relin-blo translation of the IJlblo, and the Invention In-vention of printing was necessary to properly spread its teachings. Gutenberg v.aa born in 1400, sixteen years after Wycllffe's death. It wua along about 1450 when ho perfoctcd his invention, and tho Drat book prinU-d was tho Bible. Tho speaker told of how John Faust had cheated Gutcnborg out of the invention inven-tion by foreclosing a mortgage ho held i lor a slight debt; how Faust went to ; Paris and, after publishing the Bible, was arraigned on tho chargo of being ln leaguo with tho devil. The arraignment i hrought out Faust's uecret of multiplying ; books. Gutenoorg, to whom all the credit i wm due, died poor nnd childless in HG5, Dr. Plnkorton showod the effect that tho dissemination of tho Bible's teachings and i of other books had upon tho intellectual , and moral growth of tho people.
