Show THE DEMOCRATS RATIFY. The Democrats have had their little ratification meeting here after waiting so long that most of the Interest in the nomination for President had passed away, and .while yet the nomination for Vice-President wns In doubt, and the patch In tho platform was being both Insisted on and resisted. The speeches were tame, and not one of them but could and would have been mado in about tho same terms and with the same warmth If any other man had been nominated, and a real platform had been adopted, instead of "a treatise rather than a platform, a largo volume of words without saying anything," as a prominent delegato from South Dakota Da-kota put It, Judgo Powers rejoiced in harmony, without being able to 3tate what the party had harmonized on, since it merely evaded everything; Mr. Roberts followed The Tribune's suggestion that tho polygamy and church and State plank doesn't amount to anything; and Judge King recited an alleged argument argu-ment with a Republican opponent, which that opponent would no doubt give quite a different turn were he to tell It. 1 As a ratification It didn't amount to much, nor could It be expected to, with tho uncertainly prevailing as to candidates and declarations. But the local Democracy- did the best it could, and that is all that could be expected. It Is a year when some sort of activity Is expected of the party leaders, and no doubt they will keep up a show of doing something all through the campaign, though well knowing It to be a hopeless waste of effort. |
