Show SMOKE CONSUMERS AND HOW THEY WORK Chief of Police Lynch hns postponed the enforcement of the antl-smoko ordi- nance, chiefly, it is supposed, out of consideration for the Mayor and City Council, who havo so far neglected to provide a smoke-consumer for the big-brick big-brick stake which discharges tho smoke from a 60 horso-power boiler in the atmosphere at-mosphere over the old city hall. The Chief has been improving- hi time by making a quiet investigation of the- smoke question and he has his. doubts whether It is possible at this tlmo to entirely prevent the escape of smoke. He is informed by many manufacturers man-ufacturers and power plant proprietors that they have expended thousands of dollars in experimenting with alleged smoke-consumers which do not consume. con-sume. They Eay that they would bo only too glad to put in any device which will do what It Is represented to do, but, until they dan bo assured that the consumer will work, they do not wish to Invest any more cash In testing them Tho new Erlckson-Bamhorger consumer con-sumer has been spoken of so highly that the Chief has been making Inquiries In-quiries in regard to it and finds that It can be installed in the city's furnace at a cost of about $13u. He is In favor of I giving the invention a thorough test so that tho city can demonstrate whether smoke consumption Is a possibility or an Irrldescent dream. Observing that one of the big- business busi-ness blocks in the city produced little If any smoke, the Chief of Police consulted con-sulted the engineer, who said. "I do not know how much good these smoke-consumers will do, but I think one of the principal causes of smoke is overpressure on the boilers. Where a boiler 1b ran under forced draught thero Is always bound to be a good deal of smoke. Very few of the heating plants in this city havo enough boiler capacity so that thoy can furnish the required heat without forcing. "We have vthree hollers here nnd I find that, by getting a reasonable amount of heat out of each one I can get along- without with-out forcing: any to their full capacity. Many buildings as big or bigger than this have only two boilers, which they are compelled to run to their full draught In cold weather. The result is that they make a great deal of smoke whllo this building- produces practically none. I doubt very muoh whether any smoke-consumer will prove satisfactory satisfac-tory while the fire underneath is being fed and poked for nil It is worth." |
