Upon the nesurnnco by Mayor Morris that ho would not stand In the way of their pay, a part of the extra men In tho employ of the Street department, who quit work Wednesday morning, yestorday ro-sumed ro-sumed their labors. During tho thawing weather Suponisor Condlo has had about fifty extra laborers at work upon tho 3treots. Theso mon are additional to tho regular forco of tho department, which numbers about twenty. When Mr. Condlo received tho Mayor's letter to tho heads of departments, stating stat-ing that ho would not sign tho payroll for any employee not regularly employed, tho supervisor natural 1 inferred that ho was to dlschargo tho extra mon. Ho consequently conse-quently told them that If thoy wanted to work they must look to tho Mayor and City Council for tholr pay. Tho mon then wont to Mayor Morris and It Is said that ho told them that ho would seo their payrolls pay-rolls through. About half- of tho extra men besides tho regular forco were at work yestorday. Mr. Condlo does not concedo tho Mayor's contention that tho street supervisor cannot appoint his subordinates, sub-ordinates, but was In somo doubt as to tho employment of tho extra laborers. |
