Show SALT LAKE HORSE AN EASTERN TRACK STAR Altokn, 2:10 1-2. Ono of tho most celebrated horses in tho Western country is Altoka, tho handsome hand-some ronn .stallion owned by Hal Brown, and now quartered in a racing stablo at Caldcr's park. Although It Is several years since Altoka wns trained for a race, yet ho could probably get out right now and throw thc mud at many of the speedsters speed-sters in this city. Although the big roan horse has a track rt-cord of 2:10, it Is not because of h!s speed that he 1b mo well known hero. For soveral years past his owner has been lining lin-ing him altogether for brooding purposes, and during that tlmo Altoka has become the sire of a number of colts that bid fair to equal the mark made by tho son of AUerton when ho waa In racing form. Last summer eight Altoka colts started In a race at Calder'n park, and soveral of thum showed speed that would do credit to horses with track exjterlcnce. Two of the moot promising youngsters sired by Altoka are Tommy Hlggins. and May Wallace, both -(-year-olds. Thceo youngsters were given their ilrst track work last fall, and showed such ability that Hal Brown, their owner, haa dccldod to plnca them on tho speedway again this &eason. Altoka 1m 30 years old. Ho was brought out here from the East several years ago by Brown, who purchased blip In Ohio. Tho horso was sired by Allcrlon, a stallion stal-lion with a mark of 2:09W. It was at Cleveland, O., In an 8-heat raco that Altoka did hla best work, In tho third heat -the blgiroan horse, driven by McHcnry, who has since handled some of the fastest horses in tho United States, went tho mllo in 2:10Vi This mark was mado when tho horso was a 5-ycnr-okl. |
