The protest which the French Government submitted to the Vatican against the recent utterances of the Pope against France was not In the form of an official note, but was a verbal protest pro-test by M. . Nlshard, Embassador of Franco at the Vatican, to the papal Secretary of State, Morry Del VaL Members of the Sacred college aro much divided over the Pope's utterances, utter-ances, some regarding them as most unwiso and uncalled for. It also appears ap-pears that the cardinals were taken by surprise, ar the Pontiff had not given any intimation of his Intention to criticise criti-cise France. Only a few days before tho Popo received re-ceived a delegation of French pilgrims, whon it was thought ho might make eomo allusion to France. Not being made then, the cardinals were satisfied tho Popq would not discuss France at ay time. The Incident is regarded as showing the Pope's tendency to carry out his personal ideas. |
