One of the largest audiences of the year was present at the Ladles' Literary Liter-ary club Friday afternoon to listen to one of the most delightful programmes In the hl3tory of the club. Much interest in-terest was aroused by the announce-1 announce-1 ment that the two best stories in the Bhort story contest were to be read. It was not known who the writers of the , v stories were, but the members were not surprised when they learned that Mrs. Morris L. Ritchie and Mro, F. C. Kel-sey Kel-sey were the successful competitors. Mrs. Ritchie's- story, "The Third Biennial," Bi-ennial," is produced In this Issue of The Tribune, and will doubtless be read with as great pleasure as it was listened to on Friday. The story was read by Mrs. C. E. Richards, whose ability In this line is not surpassed by anyone in the cits', and her interpretation interpre-tation of it added much to its charm. "The Subjective Wooing" was the subject of Mrs. Kclsey's story, which was a peculiar one, dealing with the mediumlstlc theory, with a love story running through It The story was greatly enjoyed by those who heard It. But a treat was In store for the mem-'ber mem-'ber which had not been announced an Informal talk by Professor S. H. Clark on the duties of women along educational and civic lines. Though brief, the tall; was a very line one and aroused the club members as has seldom sel-dom been done to a realization of what they may accomplish along the lines set forth by the speaker. A most delightful feature of the afternoon aft-ernoon was the music. Mr. Welhe gave two splendid violin solos, the Ml "Andante" and "Finale" by Mendcls- Mj sohn, with Arthur Shepherd as accom- panlst. Mr. Squires was accorded a St hearty encore for his rendition of 5ji "Down In the Depths," in which his 'M voice was heard to advantage. Ladies' Literary club ft $ short story contest Mrs. Ritchie's story appears on page 5, part 4, of this paper, will be a "Day with Mendelssohn and his Oratorios" and will be In chargo of Mrs. Charles G. Plummer. Assisting Assist-ing In the programme will be such well-known well-known artists as Mrs. Ellsworth Daggett, Dag-gett, Miss Edna Dwyer, Miss Agatha Berkhoel, Mr. Copley and Mr. Graham, and a feast of good things in the way of mnslc is looked for. v o A short story by Mrs. Caroline Abbott Ab-bott Stanley, "Antonio's Last Estate," appears in the March Century. Mrs. Stanley was formerly a member of the Ladies' Literary club. 0 Members of the Shakespeare section will continue the reading of the sonnets son-nets at the regular meeting on Wednesday Wednes-day morning at 10 o'clock. Next Friday afternoon the regular meeting of the current events and current cur-rent literature section of the Ladles' Literary club will be held. Miss Paul will review "Rebecca" and Miss Jessup will give a paper on the "Modern Note In Literature." The ladles of the home and education section will give a rummage sale on April ICth. "Woman's Club. Dr. William Paden addressed the members of the Woman's club and their friends Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Guthrie. The address was on Japanese Character Char-acter and was a rare treat, not alono for the valuable Information, but mado especially Interesting by Dr. Paden's quaint and delightful manner of address. ad-dress. Reviewers. The Reviewers will meet on Monday with Mrs. David Evans. The paper of the afternoon will bo given by Mrs. C. G. Plummer upon "Little Journeys to the Homes of Eminent Women." Daughters of TJtah Pioneers. At a meeting of the Daughters of the Pioneers, held at the residence of Mrs. A. E. Hyde, 40 West North Temple Tem-ple street, Thursday afternoon, March 24th, 100-1, It was decided that the annual an-nual business meeting of the society will be held on April 11, 1904, at 2 p. m., at the residence of thc above named lady. All officers and members of the society are urged to be present. Following tho business meeting a sociable so-ciable will be held, at which an entertaining enter-taining programme will be rendered. |
