The local fans will be glad to BOO Little Shepherd In tho box here again a a Manager Whitney of the Bankers has accepted the proposition of the Lehi J dean to put up a SlOO purse and have I the teams athletic contest at Lagoon next Thursday afternoon af-ternoon The feature of the meet will I TDC a baseball gamo between the two departments The Z G MV I will close I about noon lo allow the employees an opportunity to co out with the excursion excur-sion Q 11 tt The criticism of Umpire Hestmark of jg5en for his work In the Fourth of > uly game with the Short Line teams > eems to have stirred up the Ogden cans too decree The Tribune gives I space to the following communication In the desire to be entirely fair in tho matterand to allow both sides a hear ing Ogden July Cth t Editor Tribune Owing to tho two j articles which have appeared In your I valuable columns recently regarding the baseball games played in Ogden on the 4th of this month between the home team and Short Lines It Is proper that something should be snld in defense of Umpire Hcstmark who seems to be the target for all criticism when Little Jim Cllpplngcrs club of bad nctors play ball In this city I sny bad actors because the Short Line team can play ball at times The statement made by Little Jim to the effect that it Is impossible for the visiting team to win a game of ball here when the victorious team gets the bh percentage Is of course erroneous as will be seen by the record so It Is useless use-less to dwell on that point Regarding1 Mr Kestmarks fairness It may be said that all of the baseball lovers lov-ers in Ogden who have closely watched the games in detail are of the opinion that our team gets the short end of his decisions when there is a doubt and during the recent visit oC the Pocatellos more than one member of that team expressed ex-pressed themselves in the presencp of tho writer as sharing the same opinion I Mr Ilestmark has in some Instances I rendered decisions which have been questionable to be sure but if Mr Clipplnger will discover for us an urn j I pire who does not occasionally do this then I volunteer to raise money enough In Ogden to pay his salary as umpire for tho remaining portion of this season The decision made on the Fourth by Umpire Iestmark wherein Little Jim imagined he had been robbed was on a ball driven straight for third base and which did not for an Instant cross the line or roll within three inches of it i This the writer could plainly see as he was sitting almost directly in a line with third base and the home plate I Manager Clipplnger did not protest vigorously vig-orously against the decision until Taylor I Tay-lor left the box and the third baseman insisted that the ball was foul This was at a lime when Taylor had gone up in tho air and apparently lost control of the ball and Ogden had succeeded In increasing her score considerably and I her chances to win out which had been very doubtful up to that time I Talking seriously and judging from an unbiased standpoint which I think I Mr Margctts of the Short Line team I will say I am capable of doing I believe Manager Clippinger had absolutely no grounds for hiss attack on Mr Hcst mark I rile Ogden people love baseball In its I true sense and if we cannot win The Tribune pennant fairly and openly we are perfectly willing for the team proving prov-ing Itself to be thesuperior of ours to carry off the prize It Is absolutely foolish for the Short Line manager to make the statement that our team must steal her games because be-cause the record shows that she has put up good ball In nearly every game played this season both home and In the other cities and stands first in the race whero there is every prospect of her remaining We claim to have a clean gentleman ly I club of players and If at any time It I becomes apparent that our men arc playing dirty bay or the decisions I + our umpire aro raw or uwwarranCed then tho Ogden lobsters will lose the support and good will of the baseball enthusiasts in this city J 11 MACMILLAN o o o The Wilkes team will play the Ninth Cavalry at 10 oclock this morning at Fort Douglas This will be the first game the soldiers have played since I early In tho season 0 3 a i Jack Mclnecke who resigned as captain cap-tain of the Rio Grande team some time ago has been unable to secure his release I re-lease from G oclock A game between the 7j C M I and the Bankers has also been arranged for Thursday afternoon after-noon at Lagoon on tho occasion of the annual outing of the Z C M i I employees em-ployees WITH THE WHEELMEN Many petitions arc being circulated among tne wheelmen of tho city asking I ask-ing the Mayor to veto the new bicycle ordinance which prohibits riding on the sidewalks between Fourth 1ti cst and Eighth Last and Third street and Sixth South Many of the wheelmen who arc protesting against the ordi naice state that they have no objection Ito I I-to It as it stands during the summer months when the streets are dry but i they represent that as the streets are impassable for wheelmen during a good I part of the winter the wheelmen should be permitted lo use tho sidewalks In part oC the restricted district during tho winter The wheelmen also claim that the portion of tho ordinance providing pro-viding that eight feet of the middle of the street shall be set apart for the use of the wheelmen Is Impracticable in the narrow streets in the northern part of I the city where the car tracks and wagon roads occupy virtually all the I space v sa 8 Many drivers of fancy vehicles have I deserted thp drive around Liberty park and aic using the bicycle path for a roadway It was thought the bicycle path would 10 reserved exclusively for the use of wheelmen but the park I policemen say It is not within their power to keep carriages off the pathos path-os the ordinance does not prohibit carriages car-riages driving on 1U If this condition Is permitted to continue the path will be of no material advantage to the wheelmen 8 a ft William Vaughn the Los Angeles champion has defeated John Chapman twice in the past week and is seadlly coming to the front He has a good finishing streak
