| Show WITHOUT DECENCY 3IEUORY OB SHAME I After publishing to the country for years the grossest misrepresentations I concerning the Mormon church and its domination in politics until almost every paper in the country was led to believe that jn Utah there was a most complete union of church and state the paper which thus maligned the Mormon church and the Mormon people I peo-ple now endeavors daily to throw the I blame for this popular belief on the Democratic party I Referring on Wednesday > to a remark re-mark of a Texas paper the Tribune says of the Democrats in Utah They started that kind of talk in every I Democratic sanctum in the United j States Everybody here knows who i is responsible for the opinion of the j I press of the country on this point It j was the persistent endeavor of the Tribune to start that kind of talk in every sanctum of every paper of every party in the United States I It would do the same today but for i the fact that the trend of affairs here now is in favor of the Republican i party Solely on that account it goes back on Its own record It is utterly without principle and therefore is with I out shame When it served its purpose pur-pose it published the following lie for I political effect a lie that was telegraphed tele-graphed all over the territory to influence in-fluence Mormons to vote the Repuibli I can ticket It is believed even up to date a Republican sheet in Logan i having within a few days repeated the falsehood This is the language of the I Tribune lOne of the earliest votes cast in I Farmers precinct was that of Wilford Woodruff the venerable president of I II the Mormon church In spite of his SS years of life President Woodruff got I out of his buggy without assistance I and walked with firm tread to the I polls He was handed Democratic I tickets by a Democrat and Republican I tickets by a Republican and after j scanning each handed the Democratic I i ballot back Folding up a blue and U white Republican ticket and being j properly registered was allowed to cast his ballot for American principles I Why was that hatched up and telegraphed I tele-graphed to distant places on the day lor election Why was the untruth pub I j I lished in the Tribune and copied into I other Republican papers We refer of course to the last sentence of the paragraph para-graph I It was the misuse made by Republicans Republi-cans of utterances innocent lira themselves 1 them-selves and the impressions created by Republicans under the prcltence that I they were the vie svs of the Mormon leaders against which the Democrats II protested and which are responsible for the late te excitement on tlhis ques I tJon j U While the Democratic party was in j two ascendant here the cry of church j I and state was kept up by the Tri June incessantly < It never changed II its tone in the slightest until it thougiht the church Influence was in favor of She Republican party and then 3t was willing to fall in with any disreputable trick to foster that Influence and apologize apolo-gize for its exercise Its present attempt at-tempt to unload all its pile of scandalous scan-dalous antiMormon falsehood upon the back of the DemooraitJic party is understood under-stood and despised by every decent Republican Re-publican In TTtiafh |
