| Show COLD THE WAVE AT LAST REACI1HD THE GREAT CITY Fierce Gale on Lake Erie Causes Vessels to Remain in Harbor Several Steamers Grounded Many Disasters Looked For NEW YORK Nov 20The cold wave that has been general throughout the west and northwest for the past thirtysix hours reached here tonight and gave the toiling masses homeward bound about 6 oclock the first real suggestion of winter being in their midst At the weather bureau at 11 oclock it was said that there had been a drop in the temperature from 49 degrees de-grees at noon to D2 degrees freezing point and which was accompanied by a stiff breaze from the northwest that attained a velocity of forty miles an hour and sent a chill through the pedestrian pe-destrian who had neglected to take his fall overcoat from its summer retreat The conditions are favorable for alight a-light fall of snow as at S pm tonight to-night it was snowing at Buffalo Montreal Mont-real Oswego and Albany N Y while it was raining at Boston and Portland II I i I Vessels Held Up CLEVELAND Nov 20Snow storm accompanied by a fierce northwest gale has prevailed on Lake Erie since midnight causing such tremendous sea that very few vessels are attempting to enter or leave the harbor It is believed be-lieved some boats were caught out in the gale Very Severe DETROIT Nov 20Last nights storm seems to have been most severe on Lake Huon The steamer Northern North-ern Wave went ashore trying to enter a harbor of refuge at Sand Beach The crew are on board ibut safe The steamer Kearsarge grounded inside the harbor The wreck of a steamer was seen today to-day drifting off Point Crescent The lifesaving crew from Port Austin has gone to the rescue At Boston I BOSTON Nov 20The advance guard of the approaching cold wave reached Boston tonight Snow began falling at 11 oclock Wreckage Washed Ashore CHICAGO Nov 20A dispatch from Gharlevoix Mich tonight stated tfhat fishermen at the Point two males north of there reported wreckage coming ashore One packet life preserver was marked iL C Corning Parts of a vessels gunwale and cabin were also picked up pced I There is no bat namied L C Corning Corn-ing on the lakes but fit is possible the wreckage mgt be from the schooner Ida Corning the word Ida being mistaken mis-taken for L a t The Ida Corning ipassed Port Huron bound up November 16 in tow of the steer Osceola Since then there Is no record of her whereabouts i < t |
