| Show LET THEM DOWN EASY The newspapers of Utah should not join in the fiction palmed upon people peo-ple who do not know better Chat the Republican party will restore silver to the status it held before that party demonetized the white metal The Nephi Times has this editorial paragraph para-graph The Times is a strong advocate of the remonet ± zation of silver and we believe be-lieve the Republican party will do justice jus-tice to the lhite metal but considering consider-ing the many othor important questions ques-tions confronting the party Republicans Republi-cans must not lose heart if the great National body do not tear their clothes off in righting the wrong done silver That is a sort of gentle letting down of the Utah silverites that they may not be too greatly and too suddenly shocked by tflief blow which the Na tiional Republican party will deal to its silver advocates in 1S96 Of course not That party will not tear off its clothes nor rend a single garment in any such effort as to right the wrong whidh < iti did to silver in 1873 But it has fought like a tiger ever since that time to prevent the righting of that wrong The Congressional Congres-sional Record is a record of Republic cam opposition to every free silver measure introduced by Democrats in the national legislature and of expedi eats to ward off such a reform of our coinage laws as would place silverback silver-back in its proper place as a standard stand-ard money metal The gentle cooing of the Times is the first sincere Word of warning if it goes to that length which has been uttered from a Republican source in Utah that tine Republican party is not likely to favor salver in 189G In the east the Republican papers are denouncing de-nouncing the silver craze as Democratic DemO-cratic and claiming credit for the de votion of the Republican party to the sound money policy by which they designate the gold standard Grover Cleveland and Secretary Carlisle Car-lisle While denounced by tine majority of tine Democratic party for their financial policy are commended and flattered by Republican leaders and papers That is quite consistent For the gold policy is Republicanism < The bonding policy is Republicanism The whole financdal policy of the present administration is Republicanism and that is why Republicans praise while Democrats decry the course pursued by the President and the Secretary The Republican papers of Utah ouglht to tell their readers the truth on this matter And if they dare not fell it all they should at least emulate the Nephi Times and let the deluded followers of the Republican party down easy for they will certainly cer-tainly reach the bottom facts before long and realize that they have been deceived by both orators and papers of their party on the silver question |
