Show FREE SEEDS The fiee distribution of seeds by the government has grown to be a very large business so large that it is said to be seriously affecting those who arc engaged In raising seeds for the market mar-ket Those who get the contracts for supplying the government with seeds have a good thing no doubt but not so those who do not get these government govern-ment favors The first appropriation for seeds was 51000 and the purpose was to enable the bureau of agriculture agricul-ture to obtain such rare valuable and improved seeds which were not common com-mon to the country but which i might be desirable to cultivate experimentally ally Those who received the seeds were expected to report the result of their experiments which was a very proper thing I is different now Senators Sen-ators and representatives distribute them much as other spoils are distributed dis-tributed and for much the same purpose pur-pose I Is no more the business of the government to distribute seeds than it is for it to bestow farm implements The reason that will justify the free distribution of seeds by the government govern-ment will justify the free distribution of anything else Why should not the government distribute horses cattle and sheep for breeding purposes a well as seeds for planting So far as principle prin-ciple is concerned there is no distinction distinc-tion at best it is a difference of degree de-gree and not of kind Could Secretary Morton have had his Secretar way the evil of the free seed distribution distri-bution would have been abolished but i he could not and I is again blossoming blossom-ing forth The secretary was right In his aims But will some protectionist I explain why the government should go into competition with the private producers pro-ducers of seeds when free foreign competition com-petition with them is not permitted Why Isnt the free distribution of seeds by the government in competition competi-tion with individual growers of seeds equally a objectionable as convict labor la-bor competition with free labor about which so much outcry is made |
