Show madeT BLUE MOUNTAINS Attracting Considerable Attention at the Present Time I A great deal of Interest has been centered cen-tered in the Blue mountain region in San Juan county this state since it has been demonstrated that the formation forma-tion caries gold in paying quantities and that the ores are free milling The greatest drawback for this country however is its inaccessibility but there is no doubt as to the existence exist-ence of deposits of large bodies of mineral there and some day in the future there is reason to believe that this will develop Into one of the most prolific mining csmps In Utah During the past few months the Denver Den-ver papers have been full of descriptive 0 accounts of the Blue mountains in I I r I fact the people of Colorado seem to J be much more interested in this camp than do the miners of Utah The camp Is also noticed on the outside and the last Issue of the New York Engineering En-gineering and Mining Journal speaks of it as follows The Blue mountains of southeastern Utah which are receiving the attention atten-tion of gold hunters at the present time are located In San Juan county and are reached by buckboard routes from Thompson I dally Springs on the I Rio Grande Western railroad 8 miles north and from Dolores Colo 75 miles east on the Rio Grande Southern railroad rail-road from which latter point the trip Is made triweekly This range of mountains juts up from the surrounding surround-ing desert from an altitude of about 7000 feet above sea level to a height of 11400 feet The surface formation formaton is sedimentary being sandstone slates and decomposed porphyry all of which carry free gold to a greater or less extent ex-tent These mountains course almost due north and south for a distance of 25 miles and have an east and west breadth of about ten miles they are well covered with pine and aspen suitable suit-able for fuel and timbering purposes while three small streams and innumerable in-numerable springs furnish an ample supply of water for milling operations The Gold Queen Mining company of Salt Lake City has two patented claims there and a tenstamp mill with stamps weighing 850 pounds each The first run of 120 tons of ore yielded 9 gold per ton on the plates with a fair quantity of concentrates yet to b treated Captain Jackson of Colorado Is operating a livestamp sample mill on ore from the Gold Dream claim and getting 20 to 40 per ton in gold it is reported Copper iri the form of Iala chite is found in fair quantities in the slates on the north end of the range Lignite coal is found around the base of the mountain |
