Show I MUCH APPLAUSE I AND ALSO PITY End of the SixDay Bicycle Contest Con-test was Dismal SCHINNEER IS THE WINNER RACE OVER SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE THE LIMIT Winner Drops Out Confident That the Second Man Could Not Fill the Gap Spectators Gaze at a Empty Track For a Long Tie At the Close the Contestants Looked More Like Consumptives Than Athletes Except That the Vitality in Their Eyes Resembled That of Dead Fish II I I Chicago Feb 27Fred Schlnneer the Bohemian and a resident of this I city won the six days bicycle race at Tattersalls which ended tonight at 1005 oclock The final contestants and the distance they covered were s follows fol-lows Schinneer 1788 miles 4 laps Miller 1764 miles 1 lap Ashinger 1727 miles Lawson 1707 miles 1 lap Hansonl603 miles 3 laps Iliff 161 miles There was no exciting finish for the thousands of people in the stifling building to go into ecstacies of delight I and make an uproar over The contest practically terminated at 9 oclock tonight to-night Miller was then 26 miles behind be-hind the winner and Ashinger the veteran rider of long distances had 36 miles to gain on the second place man Miller was physically unequal to the task of closing the distance gap in I the final hour set for the racers to dropout drop-out Confident that Ashinger could not get the best of him Schinneer was glad of the chance to quit and retain his grip on the 1000 purse and one by one the halfdozen halfdead racers dropped from their wheels and sought their Quarters For a time the mass of spectators had nothing to do except listen to the music mu-sic and gaze at the empty track Feeble interest was revived by the reappearance reappear-ance of the prize winners who did a few sleepy turns looking more like men in a trance than contesting professional essional athletes Exhausted in body and mind the riders quickly sought their couches They were rewarded for their brief return by being made the recipient of liberal applause and bouquets bou-quets of flower Miller and Schinneer the two Chicagoans made a theatrical display of their intention to call it a race by riding around arm in arm and bearing some of their floral tributes trib-utes Lawson and Ashlnger came out and did the same act The next diversion came when the stairway leading from the bridge over the track fell beneath its load of human hu-man freight The fall was not enough to more than bruise those who were caught but there was intense excitement excite-ment for a few minutes City building inspectors and the police found it nee ne-e to clear all dangerous wooden superstructures which were of the flimsiest construction At 945 all the riders reappeared and added a few laps to their scores as anal final measure At the time set for the finish all lined up in front of Fred Gerlach of the L A W and received their prizes in gold from two ladies All of them had the appearance of victims of consumption consump-tion in various stages of the disease except that the vitality in their eyes resembled that of dead fish They were pitied as much as applauded I is claimed that Schinneer rested 13 hours I out of the 12I |
