| Show POLITICS IN CITIES The recent election in Chicago illustrates again and most forcibly the necessity of eliminating party politics from municipal government There were five candidates for mayor in the field and each one of them I represented a political party or a faction The two leading candidates were pronounced pro-nounced in their partisanship the Democratic Demo-cratic nominee saying he intended to have a Democratic administration from scrubwomen scrub-women up while Republican is the representative rep-resentative of the most advanced wing of his party The Republican has been declared de-clared elected and the result will be a Republican Re-publican administration the good of the party and not the good of the municipality being the motive which will actuate the executive in all bo does Chicago will have a partisan government and consequently a bad government whereas it the mayor had been chosen by reason of his ability and integrity in-tegrity and without regard for his politics or party affiliations the administration would have been in the interest of tho people peo-ple of file great city Partisan politics has no legitimate place in city government None of the questions which affect the great national parties concerns con-cerns the municipality which ought to bo managed as any other corporation is managed man-aged for the good of the members without reference to the opinions of those members nq to matters which do not concern the association AVhat is best for tho local community shouldbe the inquiry all the time and not how many Democrats can be placed in office or how much spoils can be thrown to Republicans Mayor WASHDURX will feel that ho must reward the men who elected him and punish those who opposed him that ho must do this regardless of the rights of the masses and tho needs of tho public service CREGtER did this when he was mayor and would have continued it if he had been reelected i re-elected I We believe that one of these days the people of our cities will see the evil of partisan politics in municipal government and disregarding parties will aim toput the best men in office and then municipal administrations ad-ministrations will be abler purer and better bet-ter generally than now |
