| Show MOVING WESTWARD The President Leaves the Lone Star State AMERICANS AND MEXICANS Honor Him at El Paso He Arrives at Tuscan Austrian Comment on His Galveston Gal-veston Speech EL PASO Texas April 21The presidential presiden-tial party arrived here at 10 oclock this morning The reception here was a perfect ovation Americans and the Mexican representatives repre-sentatives of President Diaz vieinsr with I each other in their efforts to honor President Presi-dent Harrison The city Is elaborately decorated de-corated with American and Mexican colors and the troops of both countries were drawn up at the station to receive the distinguished dis-tinguished visitors When the party alighted from the train a salute of twenty one guns was fired Governor Carrillo of Chihuahua and staff and General Rangel with a battery of artillery and military band participated in the reception as representatives representa-tives of President Diaz of Mexico who was unable to be present The chief magistrate was received by a committee and escorted to his carriage an open barouche drawn by four horses Seated with him were Governor Carrillo General Rangel of Mexico and General McCook other members of the party occupied oc-cupied carriages with prominent local and Mexican officials A procession was formed including United States and Mexican Mexi-can troops Grand Army posts confederate confeder-ate veterans fire department civic organizations organi-zations and colored citizens The distinguished dis-tinguished visitors were escorted to the courthouse where formal addresses were made When the procession reached the nearest point to Mexico the artillery of that country fired a salute in honor of President Harrison The court house Mexican consulate and other places were literally covered with brilliant decorations As the President mounted the platform the Mexican national na-tional band played Hail to the Chief while the Mexican battery stationed on the Mexican bank of the Rio Grande fired a salute of twentyone guns An ad dress of welcoine was delivered by General Malloy after which Governor Carrillo of Chihuahua Colonel Villenneuva representing repre-senting President Diaz and General Gen-eral Banjet of the Mexican army also spoke President Harrison in response said he received with great satisfaction the tributes of respect which had been brought blought by the governor of Chihuahua and representatives repre-sentatives of the army of Mexico He desired de-sired to return to them and through them to the people of Mexico and to that illustrious illus-trious and progressive statesman who presides pre-sides over her destinies not only his sincere sin-cere and personal regard but an assurance of the friendliness and respect of the American government and people look forward said he with interest to a larger development of our trade to the opening of new lines of commerce com-merce and new avenues of friendship We have passed that year in our history I hope when we were aggressive and unpleasant un-pleasant neighbors We do not covet tho territory of any other people but we do covet their friendship and those trade exchanges ex-changes which are mutually pr ifitabie General Stanley and his aids whoescorted the presidential party from Galveston left them here being relieved by General Mc Cook and aids of the department of Arizona Ari-zona who will accompany them to Los Angel Governor Prince of New Mexico Mex-ico joined the party atthis point |
