| Show o TARIFF EJEFORMi Will be the Issue in the Next Presidential Campaign Says exMayor Graco Republicans Say Har risons Administration Compares Unfavorably Unfa-vorably with Clevelands Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK April 21 ExMayor William R Grace back at his office was ofce today after his return from a delightful winter vacation vaca-tion spent mainly in southern California where the climate did him a world of good In the course of an interview on politics in California Mr Grace said I think that there is no doubt that tariff reform will be made the issue in the next fight in California Califor-nia as elsewhere There is a constantly growing enthusiasm for it Then Roger Q Mills is soon to speak on the topic in San Francisco I do not believe the Democrats can carry California in the next presidential presiden-tial contest but I do believe Cleveland could come nearer carrying it than any other candidate In southern California especially I found that there was a very strong feeling among Republican businessmen business-men for Mr Cleveland Their sentiments were that his administration was the best for the business interests of the country Then the tin tax has operated very badly in California against the packing interests which are enormous for a great portion of the product of the fruit farms is dried and packed How is Mr Harrisons administration regarded in the states you visited Mr Grace was asked The administration is not popular The I people compare it very often with the administration ad-ministration of Mr Cleveland and the comparison is always in favor of the latter They deprecate the extravagance and wastefulness of the last Congress What aid you hear about Governor Hill and his presidential aspirations down there I never heard Mr Hills name mentioned men-tioned seriously by any prominent man asa as-a candidate for the presidency |
