Don't drop in at the times or on the day they're "putting the newspaper to bed." Don't drop last-minute last-minute releases on their heads at these times either. Make it a rule to prepare your release well in advance of desired publication date-weeks or even a month in advance. When you write a news release, avoid jargon. Use simple, direct English that doesn't require a translator or desk dictionary dic-tionary to be understood. A major rule: Have something to say. Then answer all these questions in the 'Mead" of vour release: Who? What? When? Where? You might, if appropriate, answer two additional ad-ditional questions: Why? How? Answering these basic questions is the time-honored method of the news reporter. Another important rule is: Type your release. Type it double-spaced. Also, type vour name and telephone number in the upper right-hand corner, so that the reporter or editor may call you to obtain more information. Whenever possible, deliver your news release personally. If you can't, call and alert the appropriate person that you've sent something to ihem through the mail. If vou'd like to try to get a photo into the paper in advance of the event, the secret is. again, to discuss the possibility weeks ahead with the right reporter or editor. Be sure to get all the facte on your club's event before you contact a paper. Keep your facts straight. Misleading or wrong information destroys your credibility credibili-ty with the people who print the news. Here's a final rule: Exercise some imagination im-agination in your use of news releases. Give the newspaper person a break by offering of-fering fresh "angles" on the news, not the same old humdrum information. These basic rules aren't guaranteed to land your club or group in front-page headlines. You shouldn't expect to see your release, word for word, appear in the paper. But through careful preparation, you'll have a far better chance of landing valuable and good "press" to publicize the activity of your club.
