Show 5 Bomfiofall OemdD u u by DAVE W1GHAM Bountiful council members approved the tentative city budget of $3,630,172 for the upcoming fiscal year. n THE LAW states that a city J must approve a tentative budget and set dates for public hearings on the budget on or before May 1st. The public hearings have been set for June 23. 7:30 p.m. F. The only discussion really held on the budget at the touncil's meeting was the lack of manpower on the police and fire departments. City A officials felt like they should Y take a close look at the number of full time men in each of these departments. FIRE CHIEF Darrell Mcllrath present the city council with a survey on other cities fire department has only 4 full-time employees, and these men cover a city of 35,000 people. The survey indicated that for its size Bountiful has one of the smallest fire departments depart-ments in the area. COUNCIL MEMBERS felt like they should take a real close look at the number of firemen needed to protect the citizens of the city, even it if meant raising the mill levey they felt it was worth while. Mayor Swapp indicated that it has been the goal of the city for some time to have 24 hour fire protection available. By this he means that there is a full-time fireman at the station sta-tion around the clock. HE ADDED with the approval of the new sub-station on the hill it's obvious that more fireman are needed. need-ed. The council felt the same way about the police department. depart-ment. Chief Dean Anderson also presented facts and figures to the council comparing com-paring the city to others in the area. HE EXPLAINED that only Sandy has less police officers per thousand citizens than Bountiful. The chief went on to point out that with the rate of growth in the city there are always more streets to partol and crimes to solve that his present force is being pushed to the limit. The chief indicated that he would need five more police officers to deal with the amount of growth in the city. THE CITY council instructed instruct-ed personell director Jack Mcintosh to present to them the figures in dollars as to the . cost of each additional person in these two departments. The council will then determine how many, if any, the city will add to the departments. |
