Show JEWISH QUESTION STUDIED BY U. S. CONGRESS The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has indefinitely postponed post-poned action on a resolution which would commit the Senate to approval of continued Jewish immigration to Palestine. General Marshall, it is revealed, was against the measure which is also opposed by Secretary Hull and Secretary Stimson. Moreover, the Arabs throughout the Moslem world are bitterly opposed to unrestricted un-restricted immigration and we have vital war stakes in the area. Despite our sympathy with the suffering of the Jews in other countries, wc find it difficult to understand just exactly where the Senate of the United States has any duty whatsoever in regards to Die question. Of course, it is easy to understand why certain Congressmen arc very anxious to "make a showing" for vote-getting purposes but it is difficult to comprehend the willingness of others to express gratuitous opinions. The United States Senate, in passing a resolution, acts futilely Tess it is also willing to back up its attitude with something stronger than a vote-buying maneuver. Nobody in this country supposes that we will ever be willing to send soldiers into Palestine in order to get a home for the Jews of Europe. So why stick out the national neck? |
