Marshall of the University of Utah gave an instructive and interesting lecture on Dante before be-fore the Authors' club on Tuesday afternoon, aft-ernoon, at a special meeting held at the home of Mrs. M. R. Evans, 701 East South Temple street. It was a helpful help-ful beginning to Die study of "The Divine Di-vine Comedy," now taken up by tho club. Professor Marshall explained that comedy does not necessarily mean something some-thing funny. He added: Danto's Inferno is far removed from anything of that kind. It is classed as a comedy because it has a happy ending. This great work marks the dividing divid-ing line between ancient and modern mod-ern literature. In Dante's time the Inferno was begun in U'.ni) anv work not connri-ted with the church was considered pernicious. Paintings and arrhit eturn of that iU'y cbarlv show the strong inllu-e"nce inllu-e"nce of the church. The scicutists of the time were Hebrews, Saracens, Sara-cens, etc. Being a great poet, Dante must of necessity have been a prophet. He was far ahead of his time and knew something of all the sciences and the great work contains knowledge knowl-edge on almost every subject. It seems that Dante's mind knew all -that human mind could know. The Divine Comedy is structurally the greatest piece of literature ever known.
