Show HEBREWS celebrated east side new york saw a great outpouring new york july 28 A great outpouring of hebrews observed on the east ade last night the day set apart in memory of the founder of zionism dr theodor herzel who died last july there was no extensive outward show of mourning but the event was rather turned into a racial celebration of the convening at basle switzerland of the seventh congress ot zionists which movement was founded by dr herzel from dusk until midnight the streets of the jewish quarter were ablaze with light in the narrow side streets the atmosphere was suffocating but none seemed to notice it every hebrew able to walk was in the street and seemed happy and hopeful tor the future with the flares of their torches lighting up more jews who though not enrolled loudly expressed their sympathy members of the zionist league marched to the music of many bands there were old men with black skull caps and heavy beards young men and little boys and girls each waving the flag of zion which Is white with two bauo stripes and a single sly pointed star in the center when the parade had been dismissed it proceeded in sections to various halls where the movement wa discussed by speakers until a late hour |
