Show equitable affairs and politics are considered seattle wash aug 28 thomas F ryan the financier of new york city who recently acquired the control of he equitable life assurance society jt new york in an interview here to lay with the associated press said this is my eighth visit to the pa coast J am astounded at the regress of the country since my last isit in and the evidence of ro to be been on all sides As to the equitable life my pur hase of the control of the stock and educing mr morton to take the pros clency was only a public duty which ny number of other men would have beadily performed had they been ware of the consequences of a con nua tion of the dissensions among the d officers and directors I 1 happened om my relations to some of the parties engaged in the conflict to have a better view of the situation than come of the others that was all there Is not the slightest doubt about ane strength of the equitable it is as sound as the bank of england it will hereafter be run as an insurance company pure and simple with an eye single to the welfare of its policy holders As to the investigation by the new york legislature nothing could be better tor the policy holders of the equitable mr morton will afford the committee every facility and will aid in every way to the end that f a full and thorough investigation shall be made it anybody connected with the company has been guilty of wrong doings he should suffer and it anybody has anything in his possession belonging to the company he must I 1 give it back we insist however that f the investigation committee shall demand from all the other insurance companies that the committee be given the same facilities tor an in eight into their management as the equitable affords we feel that this Is nota only fair but clearly in the interests of all policy holders the management of all the great life insurance companies must become an open book cr confidence which Is the very foundation on which they exist will not eoon be restored the federal government should have practically the same supervision of life insurance companies as it has over national banks the officers and managers of these companies have in their keeping a trust of the most sacred character and they should not object to the best interests te rests of their business I 1 am quite sure that president roosevelt has given this question much thought and I 1 hope he will express his opinions to congress in his usual vigorous and straightforward straight forward way 1 I suppose that you are not pleased at the adverse comment of some of the newspapers regarding your purchase or the control of the equitable oh that cant be helped it will all come out right in the end when they eee that the directors mr cleveland and his co trustees are electing men to stand by mr morton in bis determination mi nation to have a thorough house and put the company on an economical business basis reduce the cost of insurance to policy holders and manage the company in their interests and with due regard to public sentiment the new management must in this way appeal to the public conscience it will then command confidence everywhere are you a candidate tor united states senator from virginia no indeed I 1 have no desire to hold any political office I 1 have responsibilities enough without that you are of course interested in national politics yes always and in virginia politics I 1 am glad to hear that congressman has been bated by the democrats tor governor of that the presidential election is a long way off and t is too boon to talk about candidates democratic success can only come by the democrats in the southern states organizing gan izing and forcing the party to take a stand tor conservatism and by r appealing to the sober minded thoughtful voters of the country in the south lies the bartys greatest hope of a revival of the principles of true democracy |
