Show I I THE POLITICAL GAME IN .WASHINGTON. : I. j The game of hide and seek on the tariff question is now in fulL . swing in Washington, says the Colorado Springs Herald-Telegraph. i I1 It was just as most people expected it would be, both sides are joc- . keying for position and are trying to put the burden of the unpleas- . , i ant task of tariff revision on someone else. The Democrats a few days ago passed the reciprocity measure ! J and the Republicans tried to amend it by placing various and sun-Lit sun-Lit I ) dry artles upon the free Ijst. But the Democrats voted them ' i ' J i down, knowing that if the reciprocity agreement were changed from ( ! the original draft accepted by the two governments it would fail. ! The Democrats are now proposing a free list bill which they ; declare will more than compensate the farmer for any loss he may sustain through reciprocity. The Republicans, reporting upon this n J measure, declare that it is for the purpose of "manufacturing po- I litical capital absolutely" and that if the Democrats had any idea , it would beconic a law. they would jiever introduce it or pass it ,j through the house. "j And thus it goes. We may expect a .great deal of this political i ' dickering and sparring in the next eighteen months for the prize ill ; which is being sought is the presidency of the United States and j the complete control of congress. |
