Show William H. Leigh Dies at Phoenix William H. Leigh, 81. one of Cedar City's best known businessmen business-men and prominent civic worker, died Saturday In Phoenix, Ariz., of a heart ailment. He had been retired since 1919, and was spending the winter in Arizona. He had suffered from a heart ailment ail-ment for some time. Mr. Leigh founded the Leigh Furniture and Carpet Company in Cedar City and operated it for 43 years before turning it over to the management of his sons in 1919, and had become one of southern Utah's outstanding merchants. mer-chants. He also established Leigh Hotel and operated It for many years. Always interested in agricultural agricul-tural development of the area he was the iirst person In Utah to make a success of pump-well farming. Through his efforts, pump-well farming was started in Escalante Valley and became a major farming section of Utah. Active In community affairs throughout his life, Mr. Leigh Si W. H. LEIGH served a term as Mayor of Cedar City, as a city councilman and was president o the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce, and an active member of the Cedar City Rotary Club. At the time of his death he was an honorary member mem-ber of both the Chamber of Commerce Com-merce and Rotary Club. He was a member of the Board of Education of the Iron County School District for two terms and served as a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Utah for a period of eight years. Also active in L D S church affairs he filled a mission in the Southern States. He had been listed in "Who's Who of the West" In recognition of his business and civic accomplishments. accom-plishments. Mr. Leigh was born in Cedar City on May 19. 1877, a son of William and Elizabeth Wood Leigh. On April 28, 1903, he married mar-ried Ella Berry In the St. George LDS Temple. He Is survived by his widow, two sons, Harry B. and William S. "Dub" Leigh; and six daughters, Mrs. Ferris (Maurine) Clegg, Mrs. Harlod (La Vera) Anderson, Mrs. Vance (LI oris) Johnson, Mrs. Al (Ravenna) Fisher, Mrs. H. W. (Mary Carol) Sturdevant, and Wllma Leigh. Funeral services are being conducted con-ducted this afternoon, Thursday. |
