Show HAD NARROW ESCAPE lives of 2000 excursionists were endangered dang ered new york july 31 two barges carrying an excursion party numbering about 2000 towed by a tug came perilously near being dashed on the rocks at north last night at the height ot a severe rain and wind storm A yonkers tugboat which hurried to the rescue alone prevented a disaster the excursion party hailed from hoboken N J after a day at grove opposite yonkers the crowd boarded the barges tor the return down the hudson A severe storm raged at the time and only a short distance from tho grove the engine on the tug stopped suddenly every effort to start it was futile meanwhile the two barges and the tug drifted northeast toward the yonkers shore where it wa seen that the tug had lost control the captain whistled for help and a larga number of small river craft responded A launch was quickly to yonkers and summoned another tug when tho latter reached the excursion party women and children were badly frightened but owing to the efforts of the crews of the barges and the constant playing of the band order was preserved the tug made fast to the barges and pulled them out into the river when they were within yards of the rocks |
