Show By Robert S. Murdock County Agricultural Agent The other day a group of representatives rep-resentatives of the Duchesne County Water Users Association met with the county commissioners commission-ers to talk over with them a few of our problems here in the county coun-ty pertaining to water. As you all know, water is. the basis of our economic structure here in the Uintah Basin. We can grow good crops, IF we have the water, but for the past few years especially, we have been on the short end and right now is when it is really hurting, when our water wat-er supply is exhausted and we need another irrigation to mature that third crop of hay, or another irrigation was needed to fill out the grain and our fall pastures are drying up because that last foot of water was not available. Young County Water Association Associa-tion feels responsible for doing all within, their power to help correct cor-rect this situation and after meeting meet-ing with your county commissioners commission-ers and pointing out the areas and the ploblems that exist ' in each area pertaining to water nupplies, your commissioners heartily agreed that all within their respective power should be made available to aid us in helping ourselves. To get right down to the base of things there has to be money made available for some initial investigation work,' and I am thinking now in not only large projects such as the Central Utah Project, Hanna and Upalco, and Starvation, but the small dams costing around $5,000 or less that could be erected in certain strategic strateg-ic spots where high water could be held or flood water, to give most of our badly needed water areas another water turn; areas such as Rock Creek, Farm Creek, Mt. Home, Talmage, and other areas on the Uinta. We know there are sites where these small projects proj-ects could be built and your County Water Association has the enthusiasm to take the initiative if you people will support them by joining their association which is one dollar per membership, or five dollars for group membership. This money would be used practically prac-tically entirely for investigation purposes of these small water holding hold-ing sites. Elwood Carter from Tabby, your president, is a man that has devoted de-voted a lot of time, money and energy on the water problems of our area. He is a man of action and I am sure that the knowledge that he has gained during the past several years will be a great asset as-set to us tn getting these small projects started. We would like to enlist your support. Why don't you, as an individual, or group, contact others so that money will be made available to hire an engineer en-gineer to go in, get the facts and figures, so that in turn this data could be presented to the Uintah and Utah Power and Water Board for further action. If you have any further questions ques-tions or comments, please contact me or your county president, and I am sure we will be glad to work with you in any way that we possibly pos-sibly can. |
