Show fz .Looking Backward XsJwOP Through the Files of 7 '' The Times-Independent Vf-t and the n Grand Valley Times C 10 years ago The long-awaited opening open-ing of a new large uranium deposit - near Moab was announced this week by Rio Algom mines, Ltd., Toronto, Canada. The company announced that it is currently calling for bids on shaft sinking to the 2,500 foot deep ore deposit known as the HUMECA deposit, and hoped to begin actually sinking the shaft by July, work on site preparation for the ventilation shaft will begin in January, 1969, Rio Algom spokesmen spokes-men stated. Rio Algom's entry into the United States uranium market came as a result of a letter of intent from the Duke Power Company of Charlotte, North Carolins, for the purchase of three million pounds of uranium oxide in concentrate form. Rio Algom stated that following shaft and development devel-opment work, they planned plan-ned to bring the mine into production early in 1972. Discovery of the ore body was made in 1964 by HUMECA Corp., and announcements followed the discovery site test drilling. The ore is north of the Lisbon fault, not far from where large tonnages ton-nages of uranium have been produced from much shallower depths during the past decade. Announcement of the opening of a new ore body near Moab has been greeted here with enthusiasm. enthusi-asm. It is the first major new mine opening in the peacetime use phase of the uranium industry, thought by many to be much more important, economically, than the activity in the 1950's. 40 years ago New 1939 Chevrolet and Oldsmobile models will make their appearance at Moab this week. The Charles Redd Motor company, local dealer, received a shipment consisting con-sisting of several carloads, which will go on display at the Moab Garage showrooms show-rooms Saturday. 60 years ago Spanish influenza has' broken out in moab and as a result the schools, churches, theaters, and all other public places have been closed. The action in placing a ban on all public gatherings gather-ings was taken yesterday at noon, when Dr. J. W. Williams, town health officer, received instructions instruc-tions to do so from the state board of health. Only three cases of influenza, so far, have made their appearance in Moub, and it is hoped that thore will be no further spread. The cases which have miide their nppi'nranco in Moab are reported to be not serious, but muy prove such ut uny time, und the quarantining of public meetings will do much toward lessening the danger dan-ger of any spread. |
