Show Pine nut crop looks bad, BLM report says A generally poor crop is the outlook for pine nut gatherers on Bureau of Land Management-administered public lands throughout Utah this fall. Recent field surveys by BLM personnel indicate below normal pine nut production in most areas. The best time to gather pine nuts is after the first frost, which causes the cones to open and makes it easier to get at the nuts. No permits are required to gather pine nuts for personal use, it was pointed out by Paul L. Howard, BLM state director direc-tor in Utah. There is the possibility of finding isolated pockets with very good pine nut production in any area. In Southeast Utah, the best prospect is east of LaSal, approximately two miles south of Highway 46 along the Utah-Colorado border. |
