Show rfri'-B It's Your Wildlife I Despite the dry conditions, condi-tions, opening week of elk season proved to be a success for many local hunters. Much of the oak and aspen leaves covered the ground like corn flakes, making stalking conditions near impossible. imposs-ible. Unlike years past the elk hunters are spread across the entire east side and parts of the west side of the LaSals. Naturally, every main canyon had elk within it. Many hunters didn't report seeing a bull elk, but most of the hunters did come across at least cow and calf elk. I congratulate 99 of the hunters ' on a good, clean, legal hunt. The other 1 were out trying their hardest to create greater opposition to future hunts as well as cause problems for the sportsmen. This one percent succeeded suc-ceeded in stealing at least two elk from other hunters and in killing at least two of the Taylor Livestock Company cows. Most of the private land on the LaSals is closed to general public access. The remaining land will become be-come closed as the cooperating coop-erating landowners get the property destroyed and livestock shot by the infamous one percent, -gkc- Both spring and fall range studies are conducted conduct-ed throughout the state by the USFS, BLM and DWR. Locally we are in the process of recording spring and summer growth of tagged plants on the mule deer winter ranges for deer units. South Bookcliffs, LaSals, and the Delores Triangle are included in that unit. After the deer leave the winter range this spring we will return to record the percentage of forage utilized. Interested parties should contact me for more information, gkc- Shooting an elk is often the easiest part of the hunt; afterwards the work begins. Most of the work is over for the opening week -now it is time for the unsuccessful hunters to stop by and beg for a couple of elk steaks. Frank Montella, Ann Twitchell, Nick Brake, Lyle Davis, Ron Warren, Thayne Travis, Melvin Ross, Clyde Christensen, Steve Brownell, Bow Proctor, Proc-tor, Richard Holden, Randy Hobbs, Al Sagrillo, Red Stewart, Ralph Miller, Mil-ler, Ray Tibbets, Lloyd Travis and Lynn Curtis might just have an extra i elk steak.
