Show 1 Devils down Wildcats j ! in Richfield Tuesday i j In a game dominated by the de- ! fensive squads of both teams, the Moab Red Devils defeated the Richfield Wildcats 23-13 Tuesday i night at Richfield. I During most of the grid battle, I ninning attacks by both teams J stalled out in grinding yard-by-yard J play. However, due to some lucky breaks and shifting to a passing offense, Moab managed to pull out j the victory. I During the first quarter, neither I team managed to gain significant yardage in their first series of ! plays, although Moab quarterback Greg Larsen connected on one 24 yard pass play to slotback Chad Donoghue. I Richfield got on the scoreboard I first when Curt Pendleton scamper- ed over the goal line from 39 yards out. The point after was good, putting the Wildcats into the lead 7-0. j The Devils' running attack again I stalled out early in the second I quarter, as Moab shifted to a series J of passing plays which moved the ! ball down to the Wildcat 5 yard I line. On a fourth down play, Larsen dropped back to pass, but found j some running room and took the I ball over for the TD. On a two point I conversion try Larsen handed off to J fullback Dennis Dickerson, who J dove over the goal stripe to put j Moab ahead 8-7 at the half. I Quarterbacks for both teams were thrown for losses during the I early minutes of the third quarter. I However, the Wildcats came back with a strong drive which moved ! the ball inside the Devil 20 yard j line. Clipping and holding penalties I on the next play crippled the I Wildcat effort. On the following I play, Moab halfback Jeff Oliver I intercepted a Richfield pass and ran j back across the 50 yard line to the j Wildcat 45. Both teams completed pass i plays, but failed to follow up the j advantage and the quarter ended j 8-7 Devils. I The fourth quarter got off to an J impressive start when Donoghue J took the ball on the first play and j galloped 75 yards for a Moab score. i A two point conversion pass to end j Jim Key was successful, making j the point tally 16-7 in favor of the I Red Devils. Richfield bounced back with a j short pass to Curt Pendelton who ! lateraled to Kendall Cowley. Cowley then ran the ball in from the 39 yard marker. The point after try j was no good; Devils 16, Wildcats I 13. I The Wildcats again threatened J when they recovered a Moab J fumble on the Moab 20. However, the Devils returned the compliment on the next play with a second j fumble recovery. On a third down I play Robinson ran the ball back for I a 56 yard gain. Dickerson then took j the Devils to the Wildcat 15 yard J line on another running play. Robinson took the ball to the 5 yard i line, setting up a score by j Dickerson. Kevin Peterson put the ball through the uprights and Moab I led 23-13. Robinson spoiled Richfield's j hopes for a score in the closing J moments of the game, when he i intercepted a Wildcat pass. Moab j held on to possession of the ball and I the game ended, 23-13, Devils. I Moab goes up against Nephi this j Saturday in an away game, slated j . to begin at 4 p.m. i |
