Show ALL STATE BAND By Deanne Tranter Five students from G.C. H.S. participated in All State Band last weekend. In April of 1977 several students from G.C.H.S. traveled to Price, Utah to audition for All State Band. They had to learn a prepared special number of their choice, be able to sight read a number, then they were asked to play one or two out of the 25 scales they had to know. There were 110 students stu-dents in the All State Band, these are the top band students in Utah. Those chosen to go from Moab were: Kenneth Nielson, playing first chair baritone; Eddie Nielson, playing third chair first trombone; Richard Cannon, Can-non, percussion; Shane Martineau, playing second sec-ond chair baritone; and Shirley Nelson, playing third chair third trombone. trom-bone. These students put in many hours towards practicing prac-ticing alone at home and once every two weeks with other All State Band students from Utah at Orem High, Orem Utah. The Moab group left Moab at noon Wednesday, Wednes-day, Oct. 4 for Salt Lake City. After arriving in Salt Lake they went to West High School where students stu-dents from all schools practiced together for three hours. Then they practiced for nine hours on Thursday. On Friday they practiced at 9 a.m. for three hours at West High, then traveled to the Tabernacle on Temple Square to practice for approximately two hours. The performance was held on Friday night at 8 p.m. in the Tabernacle. Admission was free of charge to the public. The All State Band performed four numbers under the-direction the-direction of K. Newell Dailey. The All State Chorus and Orchestra also performed for the public that night. |
