Show Chamber discussed smog problem in Moab Valley The subject of air pollution in the Moab Valley sparked a lively discussion at an open meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday. Tues-day. Complaints regarding recent smoggy conditions in the Moab area were voiced by several of those attending the luncheon. Various opinions were stated on the reasons for the problem, including emissions emis-sions from the Atlas Minerals plant, auto exhaust and fireplace smoke. The Times-Independent received several phone calls last Wednesday complaining of smog, in the vicinity of Atlas Minerals. Pete Parry, of the Park Service, stated that visibility tests conducted conduct-ed by the Park Service at the Island in the Sky had begun this week, but results are unavailable at fhe present time. Parry went on to say that an inversion layer had been present in the atmosphere above Moab during the preceding week, which would tend to hold pollution over the Valley. Chamber President Ron Auger stated that an effort would be made to have a spokesman from Atlas address the group in the near future. Many Chamber members agreed that an investigation should be done to determine if anything can be done by the group to alleviate the problem. Dixie Barker discussed this year's budget with the Chamber. To date the Chamber has collected revenues amounting to $17,856.45. The budget for this year had been set for $17,150. This increase, Barker said, is in spite of a refusal by the Grand County Commissioners Commission-ers to contribute $3,000. |
