Soma Introtlnjt Mrlloi round Doling Work of Itcitoratlok, An unusual amount of public later-eat later-eat la just now being showu in tho restoration work at Holy Trlalty Church, Stratford-on-Avon. Worknvn aro engaged in taking up tbs flow ot tho nave, side aisles and transacts, preparatory pre-paratory to the laying dowm of new block lloors and paveme&ta. Having to excavate some depth for the purpoao ot Oiling In with ccacrate and cement, EOmo CUrlniln nM vaults nuatnt taphs and tombs are being disclosed, and are being treated with tho greatest caro. A portion of the present church datea back nearly 700 years, and all authorities agree that upon tho aame alto stood a much older church of tho Saxon period. As' a place of sepulchcr tho slto has no doubt been In uso for 1,000 years. Tho floors ot the nave, and particularly the transepts, are honoycombed with vaults, and it will be necessary to lower the crown of tho arch of many so as to excavate to th proper depth. As Interments lnalde churches are not now permitted, all the vaults will most likely be filled in. They are not being entered, but In the course of the work coffins, mostly ot lead, are seen, aad skulls and bones are being turn4 up occasionally. These are treated wlt& the utmost reverence rev-erence and will be relntorrod In the churchyard. A group of vaults la the south transept baa bea exposed. They contain the bodlea of the Masoa family, fam-ily, the Interments dating from 1689. Tbo family is now extinct, but old Stratfordians tell ot a remarkable, yt horrible, act ot salf-deatracUoa ooia-mltted ooia-mltted by ono ot the Mason fasally sixty or seventy years ago. Oo4ng Into a hovel In the paddook at Ut back ot tho house, ho put together- a grU quantity of straw, and, lying down on top of It, he set the heap on fire and was literally roasted alive. Quaint Inscriptions are being brought to light in removing the wooden floors that covered the old atone paving ot the transepts, and It Is satisfactory to know that all will be carefully preserved pre-served and shown iu the "random pavement" which will border the pawa, St, James's Gazotte. |
