Show i Democrats fill slots in state legislative races i ' With the last minute filing of two Democratic candidates for two state legislative posts for this area, a race ; for the House and Senate seats in the November election was assured, i Filing with the Secretary of State late Monday afternoon were Daphne ! Dalley, Democrat, as a' candidate for Utah House District 74 including Iron and Kane County; and Sherrell B. (Jack) Sawyers, as a candidate for ! Senate Seat 29 including Iron, Washington, Beaver, Garfield and Kane Counties, i On the Republican side of the ledger j incumbent Ivan M. Matheson, had earlier filed to seek re-election to the ! Senate post. In addition Gam Huskinson of St. George, a CPA, had also filed for the Sena te post presently f held by Matheson. R. Haze Hunter, Cedar City j businessman, had earlier announced his candidacy for the Utah House District 74 post, formerly held by Garth Jones of Cedar City, who chose not to seek re-election this year. In Iron County it shapes up as a purely Republican contest.' Dee G. Cowan, who has served on the Iron County Commission for the past two years, will seek re-election but to a four year term. He will be challenged by fellow Republican Ken Clark of Kanarraville. The four year spot is being relinquished by Jim Clark, who is not seeking re-election. A. two year commission post will also be up for election and three Republican candidates have an- nounced their intention to fill that spot. The three candidates who have filed for the position include Howard Knight, Parowan; Flora nee Wolfram and Wayne A. Smith, both of Cedar City. The contest for the four year seat will be reduced to at least two at the Iron County Republican Convention. For either of the commission seats to be unopposed it would require a 70 percent support of the delegates at the County convention. If that is not obtained it will require a Primary Election to name a single Republican Candidate for the commission posts. Ms. Dalley indicated Tuesday that she had' filed for the Utah House of Representatives position as a means of keeping the position open for the Party. "I did not file actively seeking the post, but to give the Party an opportunity, probably at the county convention, to seek a candidate for the position," she said. Ms. Dalley indicated that it would be her intent to formerly announce her resignation at a later time which would then give the Party an op-portuntiy op-portuntiy to Mame a replacement for her. Mayor Jack Sawyers, who was in Salt Lake City early this week was not available for comment on his filing for a seat in the Utah Senate. |
