Show Fog brings out our compassion It's time someone said something about the good guys. This winter has been a real bear. The snows came and came and came. Then the cold came and stayed for the duration. Not to be outdone, the fog crept in on little cats feet and liked the feel of it so well it stayed, too. Fog is depressing. Cold is depressing and snow has abandoned us to black and purple crystals on the edges of the roads. Through it all there have been very few accidents in the Pleasant Grove-Lindon area. People are driving carefully , peering through the grey mass to see other vehicles and keeping their foot close to the brake. - " People have been courteous of others. There haven't been any bad assaults by people driven to madness by the sameness of each and every day. People not given to talk are now driven to it because of the long stay of the fog and the cold. It is good for them to open up and talk. Everyone is talking about the fog and cold. No one dares travel anywhere, so families are staying home and enjoying each other's company and finding out their relatives aren't so bad after all. The fog has pinned down the polution in the air so many people with allergies are suffering. Colds are the standard report for most families. The doctors are busier than ever. Hut not many people complain about anything except the cold and fog. Maybe that is one good thing about the whole weather picture, it has made our other problems seem more trivial. The cold makes cars difficult to start. People everywhere help others who are stalled to get the car going again. They do it without a quibble and expect no repayment for it. Have you thought how lonely it must be for the police officer on patrol in the city at night when the fog is dense like this? He must feel he is driving in another world, mist all around, no people and no cars to see. The red glow of the taillights of the car in front is like a godsend on these foggy nights. Coming upon them as if out of a tunnel of gloom, it almost warms the heart. A fellow traveler is there. It brings comfort. The fog may last a while yet. The cold may linger for days. The consideration we have shown one another these past two months should stay with us forever. It would be nice. . |
