Rice is still thrown as a bride and groom exit to embark on their honeymoon, but often bird seed is substituted as young naturalists choose to feed the birds. Bridal dresses continue to be long with or without chapel trains. Bridesmaids' dresses are street length or ballerina in style. Lady Diana, the Princess of Wales, has had a great influence worldwide on the wedding scene. Gloves are back in style; white or pastel silk stockings are worn with flat slippers or low heeled pumps. Bridal bouquets are as unique as a bride's fantasy. Silk flower bouquets that can be boxed for travel to out-of-state receptions are very popular. Articles from the newspapers tell us eastern parents are speaking out concerning con-cerning the equalization by both sets of parents pertaining to wedding related expenses. These parents feel both bride and groom in today's world are pursuing college educations and a new trend for joint financial contributions becomes a sensible new course to be considered. ..a sad note for a father of daughters whose only son is yet to wed ! It's a changing world when the mature bride and groom write their own check from a joint checking account and pay the bill themselves... thus making Dad and Mom guests too! Times have seasoned all of us well. I was not astonished this past year as I became i involved with two separate mail-order weddings... one from Texas, the other from Hawaii. All plans and choices were made either by telephone or through the mail. It is a changing world - even something as traditional as a wedding is seeing a new dawning. By JANE L. ROBINSON Wedding Consultant, The Bungalow ( Planning a wedding reception is an educational experience. One has only to visit the desk of an established bridal consultant to know the vast traditional backgrounds and customs -that are available. It has been our opportunity to see worldwide world-wide influence brought to Utah County through the union of couples from all parts of the world. One particular mother-of-a-bride flew in from Saudi Arabia to plan her daughter's reception. Out-of-state students often meet and marry in Utah and are thus encouraged by their parents to make reception arrangements in this area. Former Utah residents now residing and working out-of-state often return "home" for family traditions such as a daughter or son's wedding (see cover story). Wedding traditions gleaned elsewhere are brought with them and linked together with family traditions thus creating new excitement in the wedding festivities. Parents of a bride visiting from the eastern part of the United States are quick to tell us that many western fads have not yet become popular in the east. Eastern couples still favor a parchment or vellum announcement, engraved, with double envelopes and tissue liners. Pictures on invitations are considered only a western states trend. Napkins are color keyed to reception colors in the east, but never printed. A "Thank You" verse on a napkin or a scroll is still only a western idea. Wedding cakes are never stryrofoam, but are made to be served. The wedding cake is often white with almond flavoring; a fruit cake would be a variation. An ivy league groom often frowns as carrot cake with cream cheese icing is mentioned as a flavor option. Eastern young men cannot conceive a "carrot cake." Eyebrows also raise when soup and homemade bread are offered as a refreshment. Coins are added to cake batter to bring a bit of the Canadian influence to Utah. It becomes a good omen to received the coveted piece of cake. The money-tree dance, an Italian tradition, gives the bride and groom a send-off to a pre-paid honeymoon. A guest pins currency to a groom's tuxedo or a bride's wedding dress if he or she chooses to dance with the bride or groom. Record, continued from page 6 The Album Coverage method allows for a set number of 8 by 10 or 5 by 7 photographs in an album. The photographer may or may not provide a set of proofs to select those photos from. The advantage of this plan is you know how many portraits you are getting. These albums are usually a premium product. For example, we offer in our album coverage 40 prints, 8 by 10, in an alum for the couple, with two books of 24 prints, 8 by 10, for the parents. The A la Carte Method is where the photographer takes a number of poses usually 60 to 100 shots and provides you with a set of previews to choose from. You decide which poses and what sizes you want and how much you want to spend. This method can be as expensive, or as inexpensive, as you desire. It is usually accompanied by a minimum order, with the amount of that order used as a deposit. Photos are priced individually, and decreases per print if a larger number are ordered. The Album Coverage and A la Carte method involve a lot more of the photographer's time and, as a result, seem to be more expensive. However, the finished product is much better than the Preview method. What you pay for A substantial part of the cost of wedding ll photographs is the price of film, proofs, final pirnts and albums. The rest of the cost is determined by how much time it takes to photograph the event, prepare the order, order the prints, retouch or spot the prints and mount them in the album. An average wedding package takes about four hours to photograph - that's about 80 poses. It takes an additional two hours to get the previews ready for the bride and groom to make their selections. Another two hours are required to get the order prepared and packaged for printing. Add two to three hours to retouch the finished photos and mount them in the album once they are returned, and the photographer has spent 11 hours on one wedding more than twice as long as the actual photographing of the event. An economy package, that requires only three hours total time, provides for two hours of photographing the wedding and one hour of getting the prints all sized the same and into the album. But while the cost is considerably less, so is the quality of the photographs. The photographer The final difference in the quality of your wedding photos is the photographer. Some photographers are much more experienced ex-perienced than others. They have a reputation because of their expertise and come with a slightly higher price tag. Overall, however, , Utah County photographers only get about half as much for wedding portraits in other parts of the country. So even with the extra cost for a better-known photographer, your wedding photographs will be a bargain. Also, give the photographer a chance to work. It is extremely annoying for the photographer, who is putting his expertise and creativity at your disposal, to have to compete with friends and family for photography privileges. If others want to photograph the wedding wed-ding party, let them do it after the professional leaves, rather than getting in his way and making it difficult for him to work. When you think about it, it only takes one one-hundredth of a second to take the photographs. The rest of the time is spent moving people around to different poses or chasing would-be photographers away. The photographer needs your undivided attention all the time he is taking your photographs. It is common for flowers to come late, or cakes not be prepared in time for the photographs. Keep in mind that all of these things cut down on the photographers ability to be creative. You owe it to yourselves and the photographer to avoid these situations by planning ahead and seeing that theses problems don't occur with your wedding party. Use your photographer as a counselor to make sure that these thing don't happen to you. |
