Dinosaur Garden's committee gathers rocks for benches Members of the Dinosaur Gardens Committee of the Vernal Chamber of Commerce and their wives made a 120 mile round-trip to Hill Creek in the Book Cliffs area Saturday, May 8 to gather rocks. The group was not on an ordinary rock hunt, they were after large flat sandstone ledges five to six feet long and one to one and a half feet wide, of them has to be going the wrong speed. Pop-gear is normally trolled at a very slow to medium speed, which means a flatfish, spinner, worm or triple teaser would have the proper action for the speed, whereas a minnow-type lure would not. For consistently taking rainbows in a lake while trolling, follow these simple rules: 1) Use light leader at least 18' in length, 2) Vary the depth at which you're trolling, 3) Vary the speed of your boat and 4) change lure size and Color. Above all, once you have caught a fish stick with the productive method, lure and area. Too many trollers catch a fish and continue trolling down the shoreline, leaving the productive area. To quote Ron Rohner of Rohners Guide Service in Manila, "Don't leave fish to find fish." weighing approximately 1000 pounds each. Nine of these huge rocks were snaked off of the mountain ledges, plus a number of smaller rocks, for a total of approximately six tons of rock, according to Dr. T.R. Seager, project chairman. The large rocks will be used to make benches in the Dinosaur Gardens. The smaller ones will be cemeted upright to make the legs and the larger ones will be the seat. The natural rock benches will be in place for the summer tourist season. Gerald Huff, a retired BLM employee, arranged for the permits, knew where the rocks could be found and assisted the group in obtaining them. A county truck driven by Theron Davis and and H.S. Sowards wench truck, driven by Ivan Hall, plus several four-wheel drive vehicles made the trip. Others assisting with the "Big" rock gathering were museum director, Alden Hamblin and his wife, Dene; Chamber president, Lloyd Winward, wife, Alta and son, Lynn; County Commissioner Roland Merkley, wife, Velena and daughter, Karen; Dorothy Seager, Chuck and Lillian Henderson, Dwight and Rita Wetenkamp and Elaine Hall. Irvin Haws, who is chairman of the Dinosaur Gardens Committee, was ill and unable to attend. |
