Vlany residents participated by clean-rig clean-rig branches and debris from around heir property. Mayor Carol Scott and Council person Jolene Carter loaded rash the high school students had pick-:d pick-:d up. The high school students par-icipaled par-icipaled for several hours. Each class .onipeted against the other class to see vho could gather the most garbage lags of trash. The sophomore class was he winner. They received $25 from the own. The high school added the same imouiit, so the prize totaled $50. Several truck loads were taken to the ianitary landfill. The mayor's truck ;ven tried to get hauled away, but it vasn't trash, just had an empty gas ank. The town's people felt this clean-jp clean-jp was a big success. The participation as appreciated. The Cow Country Rodeo Club of the Vlanila High School is sponsoring a odeo at the Daggett County stock cor--als Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. Officers )f the club are Todd Potter, president; iJarla Beck, vice president; and Robin iadlier, secretary and treasurer. The itudents have been selling advertising :o business people in nearby towns. Several other Utah high school rodeo ;lubs will be participating in this rodeo as well as the local boys and girls. The ivestock will be furnished by Joe llickey. April 23 and 24 eight of the Manila High School speech and drama students jarticipated in the Utah State Speech .ind Drama Festival at the University jf Utah. Before this they had par-icipaled par-icipaled in the regional tournament at South Summit High School where they ill received a Superior rating. At the state festival they received an ?xcellent rating. Their instructor Ron 1 lamblin was very pleased that they did io well with so much competition. 1'hosc participating were Lynette Itobison, Darla Beck, Blaine Thompson, Thomp-son, Mike Radosevich, Kevin Mitchell, rodd Cook, Alan Friedman and Troy Sale. Two more candidates filed on the last day for filing for the election to be held this fall in Daggett County. John Ylin-cheta Ylin-cheta filed for 2 year county commissioner commis-sioner on the Republican ticket. Luann Guest filed for assessor on Republican ticket. Candidates are now listed as follows: County Clerk: Gene Briggs (incumbent) (in-cumbent) and Gail Despain, both Republicans; Assessor: Marie Beckstead (incumbent) and Kathy Meinrod, both Democrats; and Luann Guest, Republican. Two-year commissioner: James Briggs (incumbent), Bruce Christensen and John Ylincheta, all three Republicans. Four -year commissioner : LaRay Sadlier (incumbent), Democrat. Sheriff: Gaylen Jarvie (incumbent), (in-cumbent), Republican Justice of Peace for Dutch John, Rena Pallesen, non-partisan. Mr. and Mrs. James Briggs and children visiting in Star Valley with Dr. and Mrs. Deloyd Anderson. Kristee Briggs, daughter of Mr. gnd Mrs. William M. Briggs, completed her first year at BYU. She then went to California with her roommate to visit her roommate's parents and also to visit her aunt, Mrs. Keith Anderson and her family in Seal Beach, Calif. Kristee flew home to start summer session at BYU. May 7 the Manila Elementary hosted a track meet for this area which includes Dutch John and McKinnon schools. The schools take turns hosting this event. A mini-conference on aging will be held at the Senior Citizen Center in Manial at 9:30 a.m. May 14. This is for all senior citizens. Catherine Gilmore will be the keynote speaker. She is deputy director of Division of Social Services. There will be other officials participating, about 15 are expected. The theme of the mini-conference is "Senior Involvement in the Decade of the 80s." These mini-conferences are being held throughout the area by the Utah Division of the Aging with local agencies agen-cies to obtain information from senior citizens about the problems of the aged in Utah. The recommendations from these mini-conferences will be compiled compil-ed and referred to the Governor's office for his review and response at the 1982 Governor's Conference on Aging to held Sept. 15 in Salt Lake City and will aid in current and future program planning. Senior citizens need to attend these meetings. A lunch will be served at 11:45 a.m. The Daggett County Lion's Club has been busy working on the county corrals cor-rals in preparation for the Cow Country Rodeo to be held July 17-18. This is an annual affair sponsored by Daggett County Lions Club. Saturday they spent 12 hours at the corrals. They are building new chutes, repairing the fence, and cleaning up the area. Before the rodeo, a queen's contest will be held to select a queen to reign over the two day rodeo and the queen's dance to be held on the night of July 17. It is hoped that there will be quite a few contestants. The contestant must be betw een the ages of 16 to 21 years of age and unmarried. They must live in the following areas: Henry's Fork Drainage area, Daggett County, or attend at-tend school in Manila. Dezaree Ellsworth was honored on her third birthday with a party given by her mother Mrs. Rick Ellsworth at her home Thursday, May 6. Games were played with prizes going to Michael Neff, Marjean Tinker and Mindy Schofield. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Steinaker are parents of a boy born May 9 in Roosevelt. The young man weighed 7 lbs. and 2 ozs. and will be named Brett Randolph. His maternal grandmother is Kenna Ross of Myton. His paternal grandparents grand-parents are Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Steinaker Sr. of Manila. Mr. and Mrs. William Briggs, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Gaylen Jarvie and children drove to Vernal to spend Mother's Day with Gaylen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Jarvie. Mrs. Doug Jarvie is the daughter of the Briggs. Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson spent Mother's Day in Roosevelt with Mr. Robinson's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Haslem and another of his sisters, Vera Smith, who was visiting the Haslems. Many members of the Manila LDS Ward attended the Green River, Wyo. LDS Stake Conference in Green River Saturday and Sunday of this week. The Manila Brownie Girls held a bake sale at the Cross Roads "66" Deli-Mart Saturday, May 8. The bake sale was quite successful. The money is to help with their trip to Lagoon Saturday. Fifty people were in attendance at the Republican mass meeting held at the Manila High School cafeteria Monday, May 3. Twenty-seven people were in attendance atten-dance at the Democratic mass meeting held at the Senior Citizen Center May 3. Selected to attend the Democratic Convention Con-vention in Salt Lake City were Carole Scott and Sharon Lamber with Melna Coleman as alternate. Gail Herrmann, Gene Ruble, and Jim Clark attended three days of Forest Firearms Training in Pocatello, Idaho May 5, 6 and 7. |
