Show Witness raises trial questions Dear Editor: I am appalled at how the court system works. I have had first hand experience recently in the Charles Leon Anderson case on how the system works. Both my husband and I were witnesses for the prosecution. My husband was with Ewell when the ordeal happened. I came on the scene shortly thereafter. At the trial, we were all sworn to tell the truth. Ewell never threatened the key witness. My husband and I have never seen Ewell in a fight or even start one. He just is not the type. Ewell has never been arrested either. Charles Leon Anderson does have a previous arrest record of assault. But if that fact was mentioned in the trial, it would have been thrown out. In the newspaper (The Vernal Express) article printed in the Friday, May 7, 1981 issue, Anderson was quoted as saying he hit Edwards only once or twice with his fists while the man was on the ground. My husband and John Seger both saw him kick Ewell in the head with his boots while Ewell was on the ground. Also, in the same newspaper article, Priscilla Anderson testified that her husband tried to apologize. ..talk about it tomorrow when we're sober. Funny how the rest of us witnesses at the scene never heard Anderson say that. What is that called when a person lies on the witness stand? Perjury? I did not have one beer that night. Bob (my husband) may have had 4 beers that night from early in the evening to almost one in the morning. I don't think that qualified him to be drunk. My husband and I told the truth on the witness stand. We will even take a lie dectector test if necessary. We have a clear conscience. I just wonder if the defense key witness does or even Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leon Anderson have clear consciences. MRS. TERESA CHURCHMAN Jensen, Utah |
